In fact, in the ancient times, the Sichuan Basin was mountainous and difficult to travel, with endless floods, and because of transportation problems, it was far outside the Central Plains culture circle, let alone any kind of cuisine. Look at the recent discoveries of Sanxingdui and Jinsha Village, you can find its strange and bizarre shapes, a pair of long eyes, exhausted the knowledgeable archaeological experts, despite their painstaking efforts, they couldn't decipher the secrets of these ancient beings, which really makes them look embarrassed.

So how did the Sichuan Basin, this wild kid, rise to become a handsome young man?


There's a story.

The story takes place during the Warring States period, when Qin Kingdom's business magnate Qin Huiwang wanted to acquire Shuguang Company.

However, the road from Qin to Shu was too dilapidated, the water was torrential, and everywhere was a pass. It wasn't just without high-speed rail, it also lacked highways. So, a clever man gave Qin boss a suggestion, asking Shu's CEO to send him some gold beans, saying that these gold were pulled out by a one-horned ox from Qin, he hated the mountains were high and the water was treacherous, he couldn't bring the gold oxen to Shu's CEO.

There was no internet at the time, information was scarce, and communication was not smooth. The Shu King, who had never been out of the country, was amazed when he saw such a magical thing, so he immediately dispatched five brave soldiers to build roads.

What are five brave soldiers?

Legend says they are five mighty laborers, in fact, they were probably five engineering and construction troops.

Five brave soldiers opened roads in the mountains and built bridges across the water. They soon built roads between Qin and Shu, and brought him an unexpected attack on the Shu army – this is the famous Gold Ox Story. Today, the names Gold Ox District, Five Brave Soldier Bridge, and Five Brave Soldier Road are still preserved at the foot of Chengdu's city walls. Another gold ox-named establishment in Chengdu's cuisine industry with a key position, the Gold Ox Hotel, with Blue Kitin, a renowned Sichuan cuisine master, formerly worked here.

During Qin's conquest of Shu, Sichuan hadn't been granted the honorific title of 'Land of Abundance'. At that time, the River, with its relentless erosion, washed away fertile land without warning. It wasn't until the Qin Zhao Wang's later years that Li Bing and his sons built Dujiangyan, which brought favorable weather and rainfall, laying the foundation for Sichuan as the Land of Abundance, and also laying the basis for Sichuan cuisine's product base.

Of course, at the time, Sichuan's crops were not many, fortunately, after Qin's occupation of Shuguang, Qin Huiwang and Qin Shi Huang repeatedly immigrated to Shu, and with the famous Han diplomat Zhang Qian bringing in Hu grain, Hu beans, Hu nuts, large beans, and garlic, this stimulated the flourishing of Shu cuisine.
