Baboon Disputes Over Cubs Leads to 'War', Lion Cub Abducted - Despite Care, Survival Remains Unlikely

In South Africa's Kruger National Park, tourists witnessed a rare sight: a male baboon gently grooming a young lion, seemingly treating it as its own child.

According to the Associated Press on February 4th, a lucky tour group saw this dramatic scene in the park on January 1st, and everyone immediately took out their phones to take pictures. Lead guide Kurt Schultz said he hadn't seen anything like this in the past 20 years.

The baboon brought the young lion up to the tree. 'This baboon was grooming the young lion as if it were a baby baboon,' Schultz said. 'Male baboons frequently groom, but its care for the young lion was just like a female baboon cares for its cubs.'

Schultz said that earlier that morning, he saw many baboons, they were very excited, perhaps because they had discovered the young lion.

He said that lions often hide their cubs under rocks or hills during hunts, and perhaps that's why the baboons found the young lion and took it. Baboons are very strong animals, when they seize the cubs, they will attack each other and may be injured. The weather was very hot, and the young lion seemed to be dehydrated and helpless.

When the other baboons calmed down, the winning male baboon ran from one tree to another and groomed the young lion for a long time. 'The young lion looked very tired,' Schultz said. 'I thought the poor cub was unlikely to survive. The baboon group is very large, and a lion cannot take back its cubs. Nature is often cruel, and the young lion's survival is not simple. If it grows up, it will pose a threat to the baboons. I have seen baboons kill leopard cub fiercely, and I have heard that they kill young lions.'

However, there are also many unusual 'warmth' in nature. Sometimes different species, even enemies, will also care for each other and treat them gently. We hope this poor young lion can survive and avoid the tragedy of being killed.
