How Much Do You Know About Leopardines, Lion-Tigers, and Tiger-Lions?

Leoponine animals, such as leopards, lions, and tigers, are hybrids resulting from interbreeding. Leoponines are produced when a male leopard and a female lion mate.

The earliest records of the leopardine animal date back to 1910, when a leopardine animal was kept in an Indian zoo to attract visitors.

In 1959, a male leopard and a female lion mated in a Japanese zoo. After two years of continuous attempts, they successfully produced a male leopardine animal and two female leopardine animals in 1961. Leopardine animals had a physique similar to that of a leopard, but male leopardine animals had manes similar to those of male lions.

Liger, Liger are produced when a male tiger and a female lion mate. Unlike lions and tigers, liger are bigger in size and similar in appearance to lions, and they usually have tiger stripes. They also like to swim. The large size of ligers is due to the lack of genes that control growth, so their growth is uncontrolled and continuous until their bodies can no longer withstand it. Most ligers also have poor coordination and slow movements.

Furthermore, ligers generally have short lifespans due to their low immunity, which leads to frequent illnesses, and many ligers die young. The survival rate of ligers is about one in ten million, which is very low.

The first liger was born in France, where a female Amur tiger named Zhen Zhen was raised with a male African lion named Harry. They eventually produced a liger named 'Li Li' through natural mating in 1981. Li Li died in September 2001 after living for 20 years.

In the Hainan Tropical Wild Animal Plant Quarantine Station, a male Siberian tiger and a female African lion gave birth to 10 liger cubs in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

In 2008, a female Bengal white tiger gave birth to three liger cubs at the Nanjing Hongshan Forest Animal Ecological Park.

Tigon, Tigon are produced when a male tiger and a female lion mate. Tigons have tiger-like heads and lion manes, and their bodies are like tigers with brown stripes. They also have the same swimming ability as tigers and their temperaments are similar to tigers, which are more ferocious.

The success rate of male tigers and female lions conceiving is only 1% to 2%, and the survival rate of tigons is only one in fifty million, which is even lower than that of ligers. Tigons have very poor immunity and no reproductive ability.

The first tigon was born in Nanjing Hongshan Forest Animal Ecological Park in 2002, but it died 7 days after birth.

In September 2002, three liger cubs were hatched in Fuzhou National Forest Park, of which two died shortly after birth, and the remaining one survived for 113 days.

In May 2005, two tigons were born at the Shenzhen Wild Animal Park, tigon brother was named 'Rui Rui', and tigon sister was named 'Zhen Zhen'.

In 2009, a pair of tigons were born in Hainan Tropical Wild Animal Plant Quarantine Station from a Siberian male tiger and an African female lion.

Large cat species hybridization breeding faces significant challenges due to gene-related issues, leading to growth abnormalities, which cause them to grow large, and also lead to easy miscarriage of the mother, high incidence, male offspring infertility, and offspring early death and illness.

PS: Tigon is also known as 'tigon' in English, and 'liger' in English.
