The World's Largest Artificial Lake, With An Area Nearly Twice That of China's Largest Lake, Qinghai Lake!

When it comes to artificial lakes, what often pops into people's minds is a typical reservoir, a smaller storage pool. There are countless small and large reservoirs all over the world. Today, Xiaomi will share with you the largest reservoir in the world – the Walter Reservoir.
The Walter Reservoir is located on the Volta River in Ghana. The Volta River runs across the country, stretching 1100 kilometers in Ghana, and the Walter Reservoir accounts for 900 kilometers. The deepest is 74 meters, and the widest reaches 24 kilometers. The total area is 8482 square kilometers, while China's largest lake, Qinghai Lake, has an area of 4583 square kilometers, which is almost twice the size of China's largest lake, Qinghai Lake.
So why build such a large reservoir? Because the Volta River belongs to a tropical grassland climate, primarily influenced by the Sahara Desert continental air mass and the Atlantic Ocean marine air mass. It has two distinct wet and dry seasons throughout the year. From May to October is the rainy season, and from November to the following year's April is the dry season. Although the average flow rate of the Volta River reaches 1180 cubic meters per second, most of it is released during the flood season in the rainy season, and the riverbed is almost bare during the dry season, which not only causes drought in the fields but also makes it difficult for residents to get water. Therefore, it is necessary to build a dam and store water for use in the dry season.
The entire Walter Reservoir stretches for 7200 kilometers, and this huge reservoir has become one of Africa's best freshwater fishing grounds. It takes a month to circle the lake by boat. However, when traveling to Ghana, it is best to avoid the rainy season, and the best tourist season is from October to March of the following year.
Walter Lake is 100 kilometers from the capital Accra, which is a very beautiful coastal city. Since it has become a large hydropower station, the economy here has developed rapidly. Coupled with beautiful scenery and clear lake water, it is vast like the ocean, attracting a large number of tourists to visit and vacation every year.
