If you prefer a less crowded destination, choose Alshan. As China's smallest city, it has a fairytale name, and equally fairytale scenery. Shielded by its high latitude, Alshan's spring arrives somewhat later, typically in late May, when it truly welcomes the return of spring. Duolinsi Lake () is named for the profusion of pink-red Siberian cherries that blossom by the lake in spring. The vibrant and unrestrained red and green flowers resemble flames and clouds, shocking the long-frozen earth.
