Giant Dragon Lake Scenic Area in Fuxin, Liaoning – A Great Self-Drive Leisure and Entertainment Destination

In spring vacation, my husband and I drove from Liaoning to Inner Mongolia. Along the way, we played and explored the beautiful scenery wherever we went. When we arrived in Fuxin, Changwu County, Liaoning, we searched for nearby attractions and found the Giant Dragon Lake Scenic Area located in Houshenqiu Town, Changwu County, Fuxin City. It is 140 kilometers from Fuxin City, with beautiful scenery and impressive windmills. I think it is worth a visit, so I’d like to share it with you.

Giant Dragon Lake was built in 1959 with the modification of Chaoshen River. It was completed in 1970. When excavating two diversion channels, they resembled dragon whiskers, so it was named ‘Giant Dragon Lake’. It was renamed ‘Oriental Red’ Reservoir in 1966, and restored to its original name ‘Giant Dragon Lake’ in 1984.

Giant Dragon Lake belongs to the Northeast Plain, the transition between the Inner Mongolian Plateau and the Liao River Plain. The reservoir's catchment area is 27.5 square kilometers, the main dam is 1,825 meters long, 55 meters high and 4.5 meters wide, with a total storage capacity of 1.44 million cubic meters. It is a medium-sized reservoir mainly used for agricultural irrigation, tourism development, aquaculture and flood control, with comprehensive utilization.

The lakeside has sandy shallows, which are natural bathing spots. Tourism and sightseeing, irrigation and flood control, aquaculture and leisure and entertainment, wind power generation are all available. Do you know the purpose of those tall windmills?

Standing by the independent Giant Dragon Lake, the sky and water are one, with vast and misty waves, the lake island is swaying on the shimmering lake surface, delicate and ethereal. I was attracted by this breathtaking scenery and immediately took my Sensehi tripod to start taking pictures. The words ‘Giant Dragon Lake’ on the lake island were particularly conspicuous, but because they were far away, I could only use a white balance and tripod.

When I reluctantly left Giant Dragon Lake, I excitedly kept talking about windmills and numerous waterbirds along the way, but I left my Sensehi tripod forever at Giant Dragon Lake. It wasn’t until I returned to the hotel at night that I remembered the tripod, which had already run over 100 kilometers.

Leaving Giant Dragon Lake, we drove north and encountered a shepherd leading his sheep. In a place far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, everything felt so beautiful. We were about to enter the Inner Mongolian border, and we would continue to share about Da Qinggou.

Tips:

1 Scenic spot location: Giant Dragon Lake is located 1 kilometer northwest of Houshenqiu Village, Luckian Town, Changwu County, Fuxin City, 35 kilometers from the county seat, with ChangKang Road connecting to Fuxin City.

2 Giant Dragon Lake Scenic Area does not charge entrance fees. There is a dedicated bus from Fuxin City to the scenic area.

3 Tourism projects: There are boat water tours, water speedboats, lake island fish feasts and fishing in the lake.

4 Landscape: There is a 1850-meter dam, lake island, old temple.

5 Dining: There is a water restaurant on the island, and ‘fish feast’ is very popular.
