Sidu Island is located in Sidu Town, Chao County, Ningde City, Fujian Province. It has transformed from a small village a hundred years ago into a current sea fishing raft village. From quiet to bustling, here you can feel the perfect transformation of a small fishing village from its past life to its present life.
Sidu Town is a natural harbor on the eastern coast of Fujian Province, and Sidu Island is the largest island in Sidu Bay, with an area of about 25 square meters.
The locals said that in the early years, this island was very lively. When the government opened the sea, it actively opened Sidu to external trade, and as many as 13 countries built trading houses and consulates here. Later, many buildings were destroyed in war, and only the church, monastery and Qing Dynasty customs house remained. These are also attractions that people from later generations cannot miss.
We took a speedboat to enter the island, and there are many speedboats here, the transportation is very convenient, the whole journey takes less than two hours. You can take a bus from Ningde City to, then take a speedboat to Sidu Island.
And it is worth noting that when you arrive at Sidu Island, the transportation tools there are only three-wheeled passenger motorcycles, so if you don’t want to ride a three-wheeled motorcycle, you can only choose to walk. We were in spring at the time, the spring weather here was pleasant, with little rainfall, so it was very worth visiting. Although here is suitable for tourists to visit and play all year round, Sidu Island is a typical subtropical marine monsoon climate, the traffic period of the coastal area is the typhoon period in summer and autumn, so it’s a bit dangerous to travel, travelers need to check the local weather forecast in advance to avoid encountering typhoon days. Because it’s a small island, the fog is very heavy at night or in the morning, so it’s worth bringing a thin long sleeve.
The accommodation conditions on Sidu Island are not very good, but there is a navy guest house that is worth living in, because its price is not only cheap but also the hygiene conditions are very good, it’s a good place to live. Of course, you can also bring a tent to pitch on the fishing raft. If you spend a meal at the restaurant, you can also negotiate with the boss to borrow the land for a night, which is another way to save some travel funds.
We carefully observed the materials used for the fishing rafts, it was made of foam plastic floats, supported by solid wood panels, and then framed to form a square frame. The houses where residents lived were nailed with wooden materials on the blocks, each square frame was tied with thick nylon rope to form one group, dozens of meters wide, forming a series of crisscrossed and interconnected waterways.
The main channel is for large cruise ships to pass, while the small alleyway can only allow small boats to shuttle. These fishing rafts and the buildings on them are numbered, not randomly distributed, we walked through one by one the office building, police station, church, supermarket, hair salon on this sea community, which surprised us, the facilities here are very complete, basically no different from the streets on land. So the fishing raft is a very worthwhile attraction to visit.
There are many entertainment facilities on Sidu Island, you can stand on the semi-open fishing raft and sing and dance and enjoy food, which is very comfortable. If you want to watch the tide, you need to consult the local fishermen, because only they know the specific time of the tide, you can only observe the tide at the appropriate time, otherwise it will be a wasted effort.
