Zhuangzi: After reading these 4 stories, you will no longer be angry

1. Without Anger: Facing criticism, slander, and accusations, remain steadfast in your pursuit of truth without being moved.

2. There is a saying 'calling oxen and horses,' meaning whether it is praise or criticism, one should not be bothered.

3. This idiom originates from a story by Zhuangzi:

4. There was a man named Shi Chengqi who often heard people praise Laozi's extraordinary wisdom, so he traveled hundreds of miles to visit him.

5. He saw Laozi's house was a mess like a mouse's den and angrily said, 'I traveled hundreds of miles to see you, and you look like a mouse!'

6. Laozi remained expressionless like a dried bamboo shoot, Shi Chengqi finished his criticism and turned away.

7. The next day, Shi Chengqi realized he was wrong and apologized to Laozi.

8. Laozi calmly said, 'What wisdom or lack of wisdom, I have long discarded this title of sage like a discarded shoe. If I have gained the substance of the Dao, your criticisms of me as a cow, a horse, or a mouse are irrelevant. I am still myself.'

9. In life, we inevitably encounter people with anger, who criticize, accuse, or even slander us. If we are angry, then we have wasted our time.

10. The Buddha said, 'Remain unmoved.' When others offend you, the more you respond passionately, the more entangled you become. It is better to remain unperturbed and ignore it.

11. 2. Without Anger: Empty Boat Mind reduces disputes, and don't take yourself too seriously.

12. Zhuangzi told a good story of 'Empty Boat.'

13. If you sit on a moving boat, and another boat passes you, if the other boat's people can't control it, it hits your boat, you will be angry.

14. But if that boat is empty, you won't be angry, right?

15. People's common flaw is to be overly self-important and overly concerned with themselves.

16. When someone is overly attached to themselves, they are prone to quarrels. If you have an 'empty boat' mentality, life will be less troubled, and you will be less irritable.

17. At one time, Zhang's drama troupe was shooting at night in a village.

18. The noise disturbed the villagers, who surrounded them and forbade them from shooting.

19. The troupe's staff tried to persuade them, but they couldn't convince them.

20. If they didn't continue shooting, it would affect the progress of the play.

21. At a standstill, Zhang walked in front of the villagers and knelt down. Everyone was stunned.

22. Zhang said, 'I apologize for the disturbance, and we will finish shooting quickly. Please allow us to continue.'

23. The villagers saw Zhang, a famous person, making such a great gesture, so they didn't bother him and left.

24. Later, someone asked, and Zhang smiled and said, 'We have knelt down countless times during filming, and now we kneel again to others, what's the big deal?'

25. In life, many problems cannot be solved by anger. It is better to lower your posture and not take yourself too seriously, which can resolve conflicts.

26. 3. Without Anger: No matter what happens in life, there is always a way to go in the world.

27. In Zhuangzi's fable, some people are different from ordinary people, some are born with disabilities, and some suffer injuries and lose limbs.

28. From the surface, they have physical conditions that differ from ordinary people, but these people or have ambitions, or have ideals, or live happily, or achieve success, which is truly admirable.

29. There was a man named Ziliushi.

30. His shoulders were higher than his head, and his lower body was as low as his navel, which should have been hanging down like a woman's hair, but it was facing upwards; his internal organs were crammed into his back, and he was hunchbacked, and his legs were directly attached to his ribs.

31. After Zhuangzi described Ziliushi in this way, Ziliushi was not only ugly but also almost grotesque, like a monster.

32. How did Ziliushi live? He sewed clothes and washed clothes, which was enough to support himself. He also had enough money to help others sieve grain and thresh rice, earning enough to support ten families.

33. Zhuangzi believed that people like Ziliushi, who were born with disabilities or suffered injuries, could support themselves and enjoy their old age if they worked hard.

34. Zhuangzi also told a story of 'Zheng'ao,' who was also ugly beyond description, even more grotesque than Ziliushi.

35. But this man had a magical power: If a man stayed with him for a while, he would be attracted to his virtue and unwilling to leave. If a woman saw him, she would tell her parents, and she would not marry anyone but him.

36. Zhuangzi believed that there were people in the world like this, whose appearance was unremarkable or even ugly, but they possessed an inner strength that could unconsciously attract people to them.

37. A person's true strength is not in any brilliant talent or flashy skills, but in a calm and unifying force.

38. Zhuangzi used people born with disabilities and those who suffered injuries to illustrate the common experiences in life: congenital defects and misfortunes.

39. Not everyone is born with a golden key. Most people come from ordinary families, and some even come from poor backgrounds. They have few resources to rely on and must rely on their own efforts.

40. Everyone's talents are different. There are differences in appearance and intelligence.

41. In our lives, most people will encounter many setbacks. 'Life is not easy' is often true.

42. If we are angry and complain, it will be useless. Instead, we should learn from Zhuangzi's wisdom, take responsibility for our own actions, accumulate knowledge and virtue, and create our own path.

43. 4. Without Anger: Everyone goes their own way, and each person has their own life.

44. Zhuangzi said, 'It's hard for wild chickens to find food, they have to walk ten steps to find a worm, and they have to walk a hundred steps to find a mouth of water, but they don't want to be locked up in cages.' Because in the cage, although there is food and drink, their feathers are not shiny, and they are unhappy.'

45. In life, freedom and happiness are more important than success and wealth.

46. A Zen master was sitting by a river when he saw a fisherman casting a net. A fish jumped out of the net, and the Zen master exclaimed, 'How wonderful! The fish jumped out of the net!'

47. The Zen master praised the fish because people also should break free from the nets of the world and achieve freedom; if you jump out of the worldly troubles, you can gain liberation.

48. Zhuangzi told a story of 'Ru Hou raising birds.'

49. Outside the Lu state, a large seabird flew in, and the Lu state's Marquis was very fond of it, so he respectfully brought the seabird into the Temple of Heaven, played the 'Nine Streams' music to entertain it, prepared wine and meat to feed it, and slaughtered oxen and sheep to give it to eat, and every day he offered it with such rituals.

50. But the seabird's eyes were glazed over, its expression was melancholy, it didn't eat a bite of meat or drink a drop of wine, and it died three days later.

51. We often educate children in the same way: 'I ask you to study this and that, it's for your good!' But we don't understand how they feel, and if they don't listen to us, we think it's because we didn't do a good job for them, which is wrong.'

52. When we treat people who are completely different from us, we often dislike them, but things have their own nature, and people have their own ambitions.

53. If we only look at things from our own perspective and use our own methods, we will make huge mistakes.

54. Understanding these, our minds will be much better, we will learn to accept changes, and we will be less angry!
