I used to think this was just psychological comfort, but I realized today that it's actually true – someone has done an experiment.

A new study shows that inhaling the smell of high-calorie foods for more than two minutes can suppress eating cravings.



Dipayan Biswas, researchers at the University of South Florida, say that environmental smells can be a tool to inhibit diet.


Compared to the painful self-control, a subtle sensory stimulation like smelling might be more effective and happier to help us resist high-fat, high-calorie foods.

Researchers conducted experiments in school cafeterias and supermarkets, using scent simulators to emit the smells of apples and strawberries, pizza and cookies.


The results showed that the smell of high-calorie foods (pizza and cookies) was more likely to stimulate people to choose healthy foods.


The experiment in the school cafeteria was like this, with about 900 students having lunch.


When the smell of pizza was diffused, the number of students choosing junk food decreased to 21.43%.


In contrast, the proportion when the smell of apples was diffused was 36.96%, and without diffusing the smell was 36.54%.


Subsequent laboratory tests also confirmed the conclusion.


However, a quick sniff has the opposite effect.



People who sniff for only a short time have a twice the probability of choosing high-calorie foods compared to those who sniff for two minutes.

Initially, the scent stimulates the brain, urging us to buy and eat immediately. Once it exceeds two minutes, it reduces the eating impulse.

Researchers say this may be because the brain cannot distinguish the source of sensory pleasure.

Different senses interact with each other, and the smell sensed by the nose satisfies the brain's feedback loop for taste, thereby reducing the genuine desire to eat.

So, next time you want to eat skewers, stand and smell it for two minutes, and then decide whether to eat or not.
