Didi Hu Lake Rare Guests: Shanghai’s 501 Bird Species – A Third of China’s Total

On April 11th, the 39th Shanghai 'Bird Watching Week' kicked off.

Reporter from Shanghai Municipal Wild Animal and Plant Protection Management Department learned that since the beginning of this century, more and more birds have visited and favored Shanghai, resulting in a bumper harvest of new bird records.

With the continuous increase of new observations, by the end of June last year, the number of wild bird species recorded in Shanghai reached 501, accounting for about one-third of the total number of bird species in China.

The 'eyes' of the leader look bad?

Last year's bottom of this year's 'leader' bird is the Satin Shoveler.

In January and February of this year, a 'bird lover' discovered a rare Black Shoveler in Didi Hu Lake, attracting a large number of bird watchers to take photos.

As a result, there appeared a 'foreign' in one photo, which was different from the Black Shoveler and the nearby Face Vane Vane Shoveler.

Experts from the Shanghai Natural Museum studied it, and it belongs to the Vulnerable (VU) level, which is as rare as the Giant Panda and has never appeared in China before.

After realizing the truth, bird watchers all 'rummaged through the old boxes' to find photos, and they found that on December 10, 2019, the Satin Shoveler had appeared in Didi Hu Lake, but it was mistaken for a Face Vane Vane Shoveler and 'missed'.

The first time a Satin Shoveler was photographed in Didi Hu Lake, Ma Xiaohui took the photo

Satin Shoveler reproduction is in the Scandinavian Peninsula, east of Estonia to Russia's Yenisei River, West Siberia to Kazakhstan. There is also an independent population distributed in Turkey, Armenia and Georgia. Their wintering areas should be located on the south coast of Western Europe to the northern Mediterranean Sea, and they will also appear in the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.

For East Asia, the Satin Shoveler has few records, and there was only one record in Japan's Hokkaido in winter in 2012. So rare as a 'rare guest' visiting Shanghai?

'Maybe the eyes are not good, they followed the similar species Face Vane Vane Shoveler 'deviated'.' The Shanghai Wild Animal and Plant Protection Management Department expert introduced that the Satin Shoveler is a 'mistake' flying to Shanghai.

Many bird species similar to Satin Shoveler appeared in Shanghai recently, which were probably 'mistakes' flying to Shanghai.

In January 21st, Chen Qi discovered a Yellow Browed Warbler in the south of Nanhu Mouth observation park, which is the 425th bird species recorded in Nanhu East Beach. After receiving the report, Fu Kai photographed a Yellow Browed Warbler in Nanhu East Beach in 2014. November 22nd

Yellow Browed Warbler is a slightly smaller green-brown warbler, mainly distributed in Eurasia, wintering in the Mediterranean, India, Iran, Iraq and North Africa, and Northern Africa.

Previously, as a 'mistake' bird, Yellow Browed Warbler was recorded in northern Guangdong and Hong Kong.

In March, a bird watcher discovered the 'Forest Sculptor' in Baiguishan Forest Park

Forest Sculptor is a bird of prey that lives in a forest environment, especially in mid-low mountain areas with broadleaf and mixed forests, sometimes also flies and hunts along the forest edge, but never away from the forest. Forest Sculptor is mainly distributed in India, Southeastern China, Southeast Asia, Sulawesi Island, the Marugu Islands and the Great Sunda Islands.

As a rare resident bird, Forest Sculptor is seen in Taiwan, Fujian, Northern Guangdong and other places.

They rarely migrate, which is a stubborn 'local' bird. Therefore, appearing in Shanghai is rare, it is a bird that breeds and wanders in Shanghai.

The Thin Skin Shoveler rarely migrates, which is a stubborn 'local' bird. Therefore, appearing in Shanghai is rare, it is a bird that breeds and wanders in Shanghai.

The White Egret, which belongs to Shanghai's summer migrants, considered 'summer' nest and think to put 'winter' nest in Shanghai.

Some bird watchers found that the White Egret can be observed in Shanghai during the whole winter, and previously most White Egrets only arrived in Shanghai's forests and bamboo forests in May and June.
