Pet Tortoise Escaped and Suffered Injuries; How Should the Owner Properly Treat Its Wounds?

Yesterday, a tortoise friend sent me a rescue message, his pet turtle fell off a high place and fell to the ground, smashing into a cement board, the pelvic plate cracked and broke, asking for help. Now share our practical experience: how to properly treat a turtle's injury!

(Please add a card in today's headline client to view)

Many reasons can cause turtles to be injured, but the treatment methods are the same in principle. Generally, when a turtle is injured, our first reaction is to check the extent of the injury and classify it into basic levels: minor, medium, and serious. Then, according to the classification, we will formulate corresponding treatment plans. This is beneficial because it minimizes the use of medication costs and achieves the best treatment effect.

Minor injuries

Generally, the criteria for judging minor injuries are light scratches, abrasion, shedding (bleeding), toe nails forcibly fall off with bleeding, and tail tip broken due to external force on the turtle's head, neck, limbs, and tail.

After eliminating toxins, it is recommended to dry the wound temporarily without putting it back into the water (before the wound is scabbed), otherwise it is easy to increase the risk of rotting and pus formation. Usually, for such minor injuries, drying for two days is enough.

None of the picturesIntermediate injuriesGenerally, the criteria for judging intermediate injuries are significant scratches and abrasion in the turtle's head, neck, limbs, and tail. For this level of injury, we need to further classify it: First, the wound is located at the joint of the turtle's body. Wounds in this location are difficult to heal, and the wound will reopen due to joint movement during the healing process, just like a hand back scratch and joint scratch. For such wounds, the treatment principle is the same as that for minor injuries: first disinfect the wound, and if conditions allow, apply a wound healing medicine such as Yunnan white medicine or other wound powder, then dry the wound.Note: Do not let the turtle get wet too much during drying to prevent infection and pus formation!Due to the special location of the wound (located at the joint, the healing difficulty is high), it is recommended to create a quiet and comfortable environment for the turtle during drying to reduce human disturbance and prevent it from panicking and running around, which could re-open the wound and increase the healing difficulty.Second, the wound is located outside the joint of the turtle's body. The treatment method is the same as that for minor injuries: disinfect the wound with Yunnan white medicine, then apply a wound healing medicine, and dry the wound.

Note: Dry the wound until the turtle's wound hardens, and avoid letting it get wet!

Such as the turtle escaping and fracturing the pelvic plate, which we consider a serious injury. Generally, turtles with such severe injuries will not have high expectations, because the healing probability is low. Turtles with such external injuries are likely to have internal injuries, and it is impossible to treat these internal injuries, so we can only treat the external injuries according to the above methods, disinfect and dry them, and take care of them, and cannot treat any possible internal injuries.None of the picturesps: When raising pet turtles, the owner should take measures to prevent turtles from escaping (make the turtle pool high, or put the turtle pool lower than the ground), to avoid turtles escaping and falling, causing injuries.
