The True Appearance of Ancient Sharks: Featuring Over 300 Teeth, Somewhat Similar to Eels

Sharks are the kings of the ocean. Their ferocious and swift attacks drive many animals and humans to flee. But in fact, what we see as ferocious sharks are only a few species. There are also some we haven’t seen before.

Take the hagfish shark for example. They existed 50 million years ago, but are almost invisible in the modern era. If it wasn’t for the 12-year fishing situation, they would have been listed as extinct animals. According to the fishing situation at the time, this shark was indeed a hagfish shark. Later, through further research by scientists, it was discovered that sharks like to live in deep-sea areas of 600 meters or less, meaning this discovery was simply a chance encounter.

We don’t know if sharks are still in the deep sea, but we believe they should be. After all, if such sharks are so rare, they would have already disappeared, and we wouldn’t be able to find them. However, the appearance of the hagfish shark has also made many people see different sharks.

In our impression, sharks are like great white sharks, while hagfish sharks have shark heads and eel-like bodies, which is very interesting. If you don’t recognize this shark, you might think it’s a variant of an eel. However, according to the records, the appearance of the hagfish shark is actually the most primitive shark.

According to ancient shark fossil records, ancient sharks were like this. Although this fish looks weak, it is fierce when hunting. Not long ago, a suspected fish bone was discovered in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

Because of its unique appearance, it was sent to the paleontology institute. Institute director Linda Frey and his colleagues carefully studied it and found that this fossil actually came from an ancient shark, which is a very rare shark species called phoebodus. Ancient phoebodus now looks like a hagfish shark, but it is more ferocious than the hagfish shark.
