China's Green Paradise · Most Oxygenous Sanming · Yuang'an's Beauty: The Emerald Dove
Parrots (Psittacidae) comprise 18 genera, 94 species, and 307 subspecies. China has 5 genera and 11 species, with recorded sightings of Archers, Crowned Parakeets, Green Parakeets, Turquoise parrots and Topaz parrots (3 genera, 5 species), of which Archers and Crowned Parakeets are particularly difficult to encounter, and have only been recorded in Qingshui.
Parrots (Psittacidae) are characterized by robust bodies and vibrant plumage; many species possess crests. They have short legs and typically have short or moderately sized tails. Parrots are solitary birds, often perching alone on branches or rocks near water, ambushing prey, primarily feeding on small fish. They commonly perch upright on low branches and reeds near water, and also on rocks, hunting for fish and shrimp. Parrots, when submerged in the water, maintain excellent vision because their eyes rapidly adjust to the contrast of light and shadow underwater; this is why their fishing success rate is almost 100%, with no misses. They typically nest in burrows on cliffs. Both males and females incubate eggs, but only the female feeds the chicks.
