Take a Look: Which Swimming Strokes Suit You?
Yang Jixin, Associate Professor of Sports Injury Rehabilitation at Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, stated that swimming is indeed a good sport.

Due to the buoyancy of water, when people are in the water, the burden on muscles and joints is greatly reduced, and muscles and joints are relaxed. This has a very good auxiliary effect on the rehabilitation treatment of waist and leg pain and osteoarthropathy. However, if swimming posture is incorrect or overexertion, it can exacerbate muscle and joint damage.
1 Frog stroke Waist and neck pain patients, suitable
Mainly relies on abdominal and leg muscle strength, while frog stroke requires shoulder and back muscle strength during breathing. Therefore, patients with waist and neck pain and cervical spondylopathy are suitable for frog stroke.
Because the leg movements in frog stroke are mainly completed by inward water clamping and outward water pushing, this will increase the burden on the knee joint ligaments and the friction of the knee joint. Therefore, patients with knee osteoarthritis should avoid frog stroke.
2 Butterfly stroke, waist and neck pain, herniated intervertebral discs, not suitable
Mainly relies on abdominal and upper limb strength, the action amplitude is relatively large, and long-term butterfly stroke is easy to cause chronic inflammation of shoulder soft tissues, which is commonly known as 'swimmer's shoulder' due to excessive use of the shoulders. Long-term butterfly stroke also easily causes compressive fracture due to long-term action of the vertebral body. Therefore, experts suggest that patients with waist and neck pain or intervertebral disc herniation should not do butterfly stroke.
3 Backstroke Cervical spondylopathy patients, suitable
Mainly relies on abdominal strength to maintain the balance of the trunk, repeated shoulder rotation to sweep the water, and alternating up and down kicking of the legs to complete the main action. Because the neck is a rear-leaning posture in backstroke, the cervical small joints are exercised. Therefore, patients with cervical spondylopathy are more suitable for backstroke. But backstroke requires high demands for shoulder movements and leg kicking actions, and backstroke may bring 'swimmer's shoulder' and 'swimmer's ankle' sports injury diseases.

Expert suggestions
1. Pre-water warm-up exercise is essential. The warm-up time should not be less than 10 minutes.
2. If the purpose is rehabilitation treatment, the number of times swimming per week should not exceed 3 times to avoid excessive fatigue and sports injury.
3. Waist and leg pain, acute osteoarthropathy should not swim, it is appropriate to do swimming in the recovery period, and in the guidance of doctors, to take the correct swimming posture, to develop appropriate exercise volume and exercise cycle.
