An Unknown Pig Species Lives in the African Rainforests - Giant Forest Hog
Wild pigs are an important source of meat for humans, they are derived from wild boars, boars are the most widely distributed species in the pig family, distributed across Eurasia, ranging from mid- to high-latitude regions, and even in North Africa with some distribution. It was introduced to various countries in the last century, such as the United States, Australia, Argentina, Papua New Guinea, and so on, and then multiplied in the wild. In 2008, there were about 400,000 wild boars in the United States, and 25 million wild boars in Australia, which is equivalent to the population of the country. In some European countries, wild boars also formed a situation of rampant proliferation, such as Italian wild boars had 100-200,000 heads.

Part of the pig and Wattlebird species
The first one on the left is Large Forest Hog, the bottom line is Wattlebird species.
Wild boars in the biological classification refer to a species, scientific name Eurasian wild boarBut wild boar, as a wild boar animal, is not only one kind of wild boar, there are 5 kinds in Africa alone, today we will talk about one giant pig species in Africa – Large Forest Hog.

From top to bottom: Large Forest Hog, Common Wild Boar, Desert Wild Boar
The most famous pig species in Africa is the Wild Boar, also known as Penny in Lion KingBesides Wild Boar, there are also Desert Wild Boar, Masked Wild Boar, Red River Hog, Large Forest HogThese kinds of pigs have very weird appearancesThe biggest one is the Large Forest Hog
Large Forest Hog, also known as Giant Forest Hog, is translated literally from the English name Giant Forest Hog, meaning a pig that lives in a forest of great size. Large Forest Hogs are stout in body, with black hair, and the most prominent feature is the two protrusions on the face, with a long snout, resembling a cylinder, and prominent tusks. From the aesthetic point of view of humans, this pig is ugly to death, even uglier than wild boars, but I think the tusks and protrusions look very powerfulLarge Forest Hogs live in the tropical rainforests of central and western Africa, extending to Senegal in the west and Kenya in the east, divided into three subspecies.

The ‘big’ of Large Forest Hog is really not a jokeResearchers insisted that it is the wild boar family species with the largest average weight, there is no doubt about itMany people say that the wild boars in Northeast China and Russian Far East can grow up to seven or eight hundred catties, but that is only a small number, wild boars are distributed too widely, the regional differences are largeIn Northeast China and Russian Far East, wild boars are the largest population, the average weight of male boars does not exceed 150 kilograms, and the overall average of other regions may drop to 50 kilograms or less

In 2004, a 11-year-old boy and his father in Alabama, USA, hunted a giant wild boar with a length of 2.84 meters and a weight of 476.7 kilograms. After DNA detection, this giant wild boar was a hybrid of wild boar and domestic pig.
The picture below shows a batch of Large Forest Hog body size data measured on site
7 male boars have an average length of 1.374 meters, the maximum is 1.9 meters, and the minimum is 0.87 meters; 6 female boars have an average length of 1.172 meters, the maximum is 1.78 meters, and the minimum is 0.558 meters
9 male boars have an average weight of 177.4 kilograms, the maximum is 220 kilograms, and the minimum is 190 kilograms; 3 female boars have an average weight of 150.6 kilograms, the maximum is 204 kilograms, and the minimum is 130 kilograms
This shows that the body size of male and female Large Forest Hogs is not much different.

The largest Large Forest Hog was found in the Bwindi Mgabura National Park in Uganda, with a length of 2 meters and a weight of 275 kilograms (600 pounds)
The picture below is a body size comparison of different pigs made by foreigners.

The top is Yorkshire pig (large white pig), yellow is Large Forest Hog, the bottom is Eurasian wild boar, the smallest is Dwarf wild boar
The main natural enemy of Large Forest Hog is lion, leopard will also prey on young Large Forest Hogs.
In the areas where lions and Large Forest Hogs overlap, there have been events of lions preying on Large Forest Hogs. On July 13, 1999, two Large Forest Hogs were preyed upon by lions in the Elizabeth Park in Uganda.

Large Forest Hogs is the wild boar family species with the largest average weight, and the extreme weight is the largest Eurasian wild boar
