Injured ‘Dabai’ Recovered and Released in Dalian!
On March 15th at 10:00 AM, staff from the China Wildlife and Wild Plant Protection Association, Dalian Branch, the Liaoning Province Snake Island Old Iron Mountain National Nature Reserve Administration, and the Dalian Wild Bird Protection Association, together with volunteer bird lovers from Zhangjiacun, Shuang Island Bay, worked with Zhangjiacun residents to release ‘Dabai’, a national level protected oriental white stork that had recovered from its injuries, back into nature at an inlet in Shuang Island Bay, Zhangjiacun, Lusunkou District.

On November 20, 2019, a wounded large bird was discovered on the rooftop of a high-rise building in Dalian. After learning about the situation, staff from the China Wildlife and Wild Plant Protection Association, Dalian Branch, immediately rescued it and provided aid. It was identified as a national level protected oriental white stork and named ‘Dabai’.

After a long rescue of 117 days, ‘Dabai’, who was emaciated when first rescued, has now grown to a healthy weight and has the ability to fly. This is also the peak migration season for oriental white storks and other large waterfowl, and they will follow the migration of their peers, returning to their families and the population.

▲ Please prepare some ‘food’ for it, if it doesn’t like the food outside, it will come back and suck a few mouthfuls.

▲ Take off the handkerchief, we say goodbye.

▲ Dabai, wish you a smooth journey home.

▲ Take more photos before leaving, this farewell, who knows when we will see each other again.
▲ Goodbye, Dabai! I hope your GPS tracking device can let us know you are well in your life.

Currently, there are less than 3000 oriental white storks in the world. Our area was the earliest to discover it in 2010, in November, at the salt field in Shuang Island Bay, Lusunkou District, where it is known as a lucky bird or the sun bird. Village residents formed a bird protection team to care for and feed it. Over the past ten years, the number of oriental white storks has increased from seven to more than 150, and Zhangjiacun has registered the ‘Mifan’ agricultural product trademark, which has now become a famous trademark of Liaoning Province.
