Luoping's Ecology Restored: Clamp-billed Gulls Return

Recently, a group of large birds appeared in the fields of Jiangyan Village, Luoping County, Qujing City, Yunnan Province. These ‘large birds’ were different from other waterfowl, with larger bodies and long, prominent beaks. After comparison, these birds were identified as the rare and endangered Clamp-billed Gull.

The Clamp-billed Gull’s arrival at Jiangyan Village is a sign of the improvement of the local ecological vegetation. Local villagers said they had never seen such a ‘large bird’ before. The Clamp-billed Gull, a member of the stork family, is also known as the Asian Hook-billed Stork, a species that lives in Southeast Asian tropical regions and is an endangered species. It is rare in China, and it was first recorded in 2006.

In recent years, Luoping County has prioritized ecological civilization construction, continuously promoting the comprehensive of desertification and soil erosion, strengthening wetland protection and restoration, and enhancing geological disaster prevention. The ecological environment has gradually improved, providing good conditions for bird habitats. Some bird species that had not been seen for many years have returned to nature.
