From December 3, 2019 to January 8, 2020, the ‘Snow Dragon 2’ icebreaker conducted China’s 36th Antarctic expedition, focusing on the comprehensive survey of Hai areas. The survey showed that despite the harsh environment, here is still vibrant.
In the lens of research team and Beijing Normal University animal professor Deng Wenhong, 30 kinds of birds and 7 kinds of marine mammals silhouettes left. He shot more than 50,000 photos for this. ‘I recorded the bird population of nearly 30,000, of which 9 are South Polar Skuas. They mostly live on ice mountains, the largest group has nearly 6000 individuals.’ Deng Wenhong said.
In this expedition, fish research experts Ye Zhenjiang and Zhang Jie investigated the fish in Hai areas at a depth of 1000 meters to shallow water. In the 12 sampling sites, 11 obtained valid samples, a total of 286 fish. The samples included the Common Conger, Antarctic Lanternfish and Antarctic South Name Fish.
'Hai is a sea area that is rarely recognized internationally. This expedition basically covers every link in the Antarctic food chain, achieving a systematic understanding of the basic environment and biological community of this area.’ Chinese 36th Antarctic expedition chief scientist He Jianfeng said.
