The Best Sense Isn't Dogs, But It Is Them!

Sharks are yes. It has been measured that the olfactory membrane of a 1-meter shark can reach a total area of 4842 square centimeters. Therefore, sharks have a very sensitive sense of smell. They can smell blood in several kilometers away. When animals in the sea are injured, they are often attacked by sharks and die.

Because the two eyes of the shark are located on both sides of the head, it can almost feel light from all directions. Because the shark's eyes have some special structures, the shark can feel light in the water whether it is day or night.

Sharks have many small taste cells in their mouths, which are very sensitive to the stimulation of food. Sharks use taste to judge whether the captured food is delicious. Sharks will not be interested in rotten food.

How sensitive is the shark's sense of smell?

According to fossil investigation and scientists' calculation, sharks lived on land for about 1.8 million years. It existed more than 300 million years ago, and its appearance has not changed much so far, which shows its strong survival ability. But it is extremely fierce in character, which is no wonder people have a large bias against it, thinking it is so primitive and stupid. In fact, sharks not only have highly developed brains, they can use electromagnetic fields to navigate, they can store information in the center of the brain, and they can directly send information to the motor nervous system; and rely on sensitive sense of smell to maintain all life activities. Therefore, the sense of smell is more important and mysterious to sharks. Sharks are particularly sensitive to odors in the sea, especially to the smell of blood and diseased fish's irregular swimming or minor bleeding, which can attract them from a distance, even exceeding the sense of smell of dogs on land. It can smell 1ppm (one part per million) of meatiness in the water. Japanese scientists found that even if only 1 gram of amino acid is dissolved in 10,000 tons of seawater, sharks can sense the smell and gather together. For example, female sharks can return to their spawning grounds by following the smell after wandering thousands of miles in the sea.
