Are Pet Medical Treatments More Expensive Than Human Ones? How Consumers Can Correctly Protect Their Rights

Dogs are expensive to treat, just recently a pair of loving parents in Asia had a fight because of disagreements over dog treatment, triggering heated discussions among netizens.

Similar incidents have occurred repeatedly in recent years. Pet medical expenses have become a major concern for many ordinary families. On one hand, there’s the beloved pet, and on the other...High treatment feesalso put a significant burden on the family.

With the continuous development of society and the increasing level of people's living standards and pet ownership, more and more families are starting to raise cats and dogs. These cute and obedient little guys have also become the darling of every family.

However, this has also brought about many new problems, with pet consumption accounting for a large proportion, and pet consumption accounting for a large proportion, with medical expenses accounting for a large proportion.

So how much does it cost to treat a family’s pet? And why is it so expensive?

I’ll give you an example:

The owner brought a 6-month-old Golden Retriever, weighing 2.5kg.

Recently, the owner noticed that the dog was losing its spirit, its physique was becoming thinner, it wasn’t eating (dog food), and it was vomiting and having diarrhea.

It hadn’t been vaccinated or dewormed because it had never owned a dog before, so it didn’t know these basic things, so it was reluctant to watch the dog die, so it brought it to the hospital to see.

Generally, normal hospitals will handle the dog after detailed questioning by the owner and then conduct the following treatments:

0. Full body basic examination (including examination of the mouth, eyes, nose, ears and related mucosa, as well as visible fur, muscles and bones, generally including registration examination fees, usually 10-20 yuan),

1. Infectious disease test (canine distemper, canine parvovirus, canine adenovirus antigen detection, the three tests usually cost around 200 yuan),

2. Parasite test (fecal collection direct examination and staining examination, usually 50-100 yuan),

3. Blood routine examination (after blood collection examination, 50-150 yuan),

4. Blood gas analysis (after blood collection examination, mainly for internal environment disorders, dehydrated animals, 200 yuan),

5. Ultrasound, X-ray, etc. examination temporarily retained, if necessary, also examine (normal imaging examination price is 300).

The total examination cost is between 510-670 without imaging examination, the price difference is mainly due to the different equipment of different hospitals, the accuracy of high-end and fine equipment and the equipment price and equipment maintenance cost are positively correlated.

After the examination is finished, it’s time for treatment.

1. Simple gastrointestinal discomfort (ordinary probiotics, 65 yuan),

2. Common gastroenteritis (probiotics + one week antibiotics + gastrointestinal protective agents + antiemetic, approximately 350 yuan),

3. Moderate to severe gastroenteritis (above + infusion + hospitalization, calculated 5 days is 1000 yuan),

4. Viral gastroenteritis such as parvovirus infection (above all + virus monoclonal antibody + injectable albumin + regular blood monitoring, 7 days is 3000 yuan),

5. Other viral gastroenteritis, gastrointestinal foreign bodies, renal failure, pancreatitis, etc. diseases, the price varies depending on the different examination methods and treatment methods.

Wow!! People couldn’t help but be shocked. The difference in examination costs is incredible.

Why is that?

Of course, there are reasons.

When a dog is sick, it won’t tell the doctor how it feels, what it has eaten recently, or what it has contacted. Moreover, most Chinese people’s pet knowledge is still quite lacking, the younger generation can still obtain some unreliable pet knowledge from the Internet, while the older generation can only rely on their feelings to raise dogs.

It can only hide in a corner, grumbling and whining, and the doctor obtains information from the owner, which is often very limited, so it can only rely on examination methods to obtain information. And examination methods require veterinary hospitals to purchase new machines, these machines are often several ten thousand to several ten thousand yuan, while most stores may take several years to more than ten years to pay off installments.

The medications used are the same. High-quality, effective drugs often rely on imported drugs. Skilled veterinarians also need hospitals to pay higher remuneration.

Currently, most animal hospitals in China are privately or jointly owned (a few agricultural schools’ animal hospitals). In this situation, all the equipment and medicines in the hospital and the various opening costs are borne by the animal hospitals themselves, which also means that the dog enjoys the treatment of a private hospital.

Here’s another difference between people and animals in medical expenses:

1. A person’s cesarean section cost is about 10,000 yuan, the dog’s is 3,000 yuan.

2. A person’s bed care nursing cost is 200 yuan, the dog’s is 8-100 yuan.

3. People have health insurance or other insurance reimbursement, most dogs don’t (now there are some, you can check the related information yourself),

4. People’s hospitals are mostly state-owned, animal hospitals are privately held.

5. People’s drugs are mostly domestic products, 70% of animal drugs are imported (the domestic pet industry is late in development).

6.......

These differences are numerous...

......

Pet industry employees in some people’s eyes are glamorous and make a lot of money, are unscrupulous, are obsessed with making sales profits, but few people know the hardships.

However, these hardships are rarely known to people.

One agricultural school graduate’s internship needs to be honed for at least 4 years and obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine before sitting in the internship veterinarian position (except for a few), these four years’ salary is very low, maybe it can only pay for its own daily food and clothing, life expenses rely on the parents’ support, and after a meager salary, it’s quickly used to study more advanced knowledge, day and night reading in the hospital, night watching animals in the hospital,

Seeing many animals die, and not becoming numb (except for a few), it’s not that they become numb, but that they are more regretful that they haven’t studied well, and they have read books day and night, and watched animals in the hospital at night!

Even more seriously, how many veterinary practitioners have been bitten by animals and hospitalized, how many cases have been hospitalized due to scratches from cats. At least 5 veterinary practitioners have been hospitalized due to animal injuries, and the most serious case is a dog-washing girl, half of her face is missing a piece because of a large dog biting.

It’s difficult to seek justice, we won’t sue a clueless and frightened dog, let the dog go to jail. Maybe the girl can get a small compensation.

Maybe she can...

......

We can't expect too much consolation, but we also ask you to respect the hard-working people in our industry, not to ridicule them in the sidelines, let alone mock them, because a person who loves animals and makes a career out of it, he will always be kind and generous, so let's understand each other.

It is a sincere request.

I like animals, and I dedicate myself to this industry, I firmly believe that what I do is worthy of my heart, and I am willing to continue to persevere in this field.

Please believe in understanding those truly kind and compassionate workers, they are definitely not the same.

Thank you......
