Rare! White-necked Long-tailed Pheasant and White Crane Forage Together in Mingxi, Fujian

On March 15th, observation personnel recorded a scene in the Zi Yun Jun Peak area of the Mingxi County, Fujian Province, where 4 individuals of the Grade I State-Protected Animal, White-necked Long-tailed Pheasant, and 1 individual of the Grade II State-Protected Animal, White Crane, were foraging together.

Mingxi County Wild Plant and Animal Protection Management Station experts told reporters that the scene of two different rare bird species foraging together is extremely rare.
It is understood that the White-necked Long-tailed Pheasant is a native Chinese bird and is listed in the ‘Catalogue of Key Wild Animals in China’, a Grade I State-Protected Animal. It is mainly distributed in Jiangxi, Anhui’s south, Zhejiang’s west, Fujian’s north, Hunan, Guizhou’s east part, and Guangdong’s north part, in Chinese mountain forests. The White Crane is mainly distributed in Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, and Hainan, a Grade II State-Protected Animal.

Fujian Province Mingxi County’s forest coverage rate reaches 81.97%, with a good ecological environment. The county has recorded 300 species of birds, accounting for 60% of Fujian Province. The Grade I State-Protected Birds include Yellow-throated Rhea, White-necked Long-tailed Pheasant, Oriental Heron, and Chinese Mandarin Duck, while the Grade II State-Protected Birds include White Crane and Mandarin Duck, accounting for 34 species. Good ecological environment has created ‘Bird’s Paradise’, attracting tourists from over 20 countries every year, making it one of the most important birding bases in China.
