Haikou: Clearing Trees on Slopes to Create a Suitable Habitat for Azure-winged Magpies and Chestnut-crowned Magpies

On March 24th, with guidance from the Haikou Wetland Protection Center and in collaboration with the Xuyun District Wetland Protection Center and Haikou Xiwat Wetland Research Institute, volunteers came to the Hucun Protection Zone at the downstream of the Wuyuan River in Haikou to clean the sandbank cliffs and surrounding trees, creating a suitable habitat for the upcoming large number of Azure-winged Magpie and Chestnut-crowned Magpie arriving in Haikou, allowing the magpies to safely pass through the breeding period. According to reports, magpies return to fixed locations every spring and summer to breed, and because of their special habits, magpies need to make their nests on newly formed sandy slopes, and the surrounding trees should not be too tall.
