Green Sea Turtle Trapped in Fishing Net, Large Amounts of Plastic Removed During Rescue – Equivalent to 26 Straws

According to The Daily Mail on the 27th, a dying green sea turtle was caught in a fishing net on the coast of Argentina and was sent to rescue after being found, and a large number of plastic products were found in its digestive tract and feces.

Roberto Ubieta, a fisherman from Buenos Aires, discovered the green sea turtle caught in his fishing net and rescued it. Due to its worrying health condition, it was sent to Mundo Marino Marine Center for treatment.

According to the staff of the marine center, after the green turtle started intervention treatment, it continuously discharged plastic clumps, nylon bags, and wires, with a total weight of nearly 13 grams, equivalent to 26 straws, four plastic cups or 2.5 credit cards.

Previous X-ray confirmed that these plastic products caused an obstruction in the green turtle's digestive tract, leading to the green turtle's symptoms.

Currently, the green turtle is recovering well with vegetables and seaweed prepared by the veterinarian. Mundo Marino Marine Center is the closest institution to the coast and is the largest aquarium in Argentina.

Mundo Marino Marine Center staff said this is not the first time the institution has treated sea turtles affected by swallowing plastic. On January 12, the same fisherman discovered a dead sea turtle and sent it to the center. When the veterinarian dissected it, a large number of plastic waste products were found in its digestive system, which were likely its cause of death.
