June 2nd every year is a day forever remembered by Qingdao people. On this day, Qingdao was liberated!
71 years ago in May, the People’s Liberation Army’s Qingda Campaign officially started, with mighty iron streams and fluttering banners, the People’s Liberation Army advanced into Qingdao in three directions, launched a surprise attack on Tiger Hill, fought a bloody battle with the Iron Riders, and successively smashed the enemy’s three defensive lines, paving the way for Qingdao’s liberation with blood.
Dawn on June 2nd, the enemy retreated from Cangwu and fled in ships, and at noon, Qingdao officially declared liberation. The people of Qingdao ushered in a new life.

Dan Shan’s Good Children
On May 31st, the People’s Liberation Army pursued and annihilated the fleeing enemy to Dan Shan, launching the Dan Shanling Battle. The 32nd Army’s 94th Division’s 280th Regiment failed to conquer Dan Shan, and the 281st Regiment subsequently conquered Dan Shan’s first hill. The enemy hastily assembled troops and counterattacked the People’s Liberation Army. In this battle, the two sides repeatedly contested and fought a ‘stalemate battle’, finally completely annihilating the defending enemy on June 1st, and raising the Red Flag to the peak of Dan Shanling. Subsequently, they launched a thunderous offensive and conquered Li Village that same night. On June 2nd, the entire Qingdao area was liberated.
The Dan Shanling Campaign demonstrated the heroic and fearless spirit of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, willing to die rather than retreat, leaving behind many moving and touching heroic stories, which have been passed down through generations: the PLA instructor Lei Fengchun sacrificing himself to rescue villagers in the fire, the female soldier Xu Yuzhu’s rescue of wounded soldiers at the front line, and the young soldier Zhang Keixin’s daringly blowing up the underground bunker – all are known and loved by people. Dan Shan is therefore closely tied to the families of many officers and soldiers.
