Before Dawn at Xiaqui Village (Seven Short Quatrains)

Before Dawn at Xiaqui Village
Written by Zhuang Tushan
One
Clear waters and clouds drift to the distant shore, willows cast reflections on the full creek's glow.
The oriole prefers the company of travelers seldom seen, counting peach blossoms from its branch.
Two
Wind-blown grass, green and fresh, sun warms, gulls peck at their feathers.
By the creek, a village boy throws stones, splashing water like stars.

Three
The creek's voice rises, reaching the front village; dew glistens on the grass.
Butterflies flutter, searching for what is lost, the fragrance of wildflowers fills the bamboo gate.
Four
The sun rises, with clear water, willows, and clouds; the sound of merchants' carts arrives.
Only an old man leans on a bamboo cane, listening to the singing of birds by the bridge.
