True Growing Up Means Learning to Bear Loneliness Alone

What is growing up? Is it when we grow to 18 years old that we are considered grown up? What does it really mean to grow up?

I believe that one thousand people have one thousand Hamlet interpretations, and everyone’s understanding of growing up is different. Different age stages may have different perspectives on growing up.
When we were young, we always look forward to growing up, because that’s when we can do many things that we couldn’t do as children, such as going on a trip alone, having our own mobile phone, and buying all the things we like without asking our parents. These are what we consider growing up as children—we can rely on ourselves and have everything we like.

Have you ever heard your parents say you've grown up?
Maybe you’re helping your parents with chores, and they say, ‘My child has grown up and is helping with chores.’ At that moment, you might feel, ‘That’s what growing up is—being praised by your parents.’ Or perhaps, a relative or friend who hasn’t been seen for years says, ‘You’ve grown so much—you’re a handsome young man/beautiful young woman.’ You might feel, ‘That’s what growing up is—receiving compliments from others.’

Is growing up really that simple?
When your grades are not ideal, you face pressure from parents and teachers every day. When you encounter difficulties at work, you face various challenges from your boss and colleagues. When you encounter setbacks in life, you feel depressed and want to cry. But these are the inevitable paths of growth. Do you think that’s what growing up is?

Growing up is when you no longer find it easy to be happy.
When we were young, a friend’s embarrassing story or a funny anime could make us laugh for a whole day. But when we grow up, we laugh less.
Growing up is when you learn to fake a smile.
When we were young, we would simply ask our parents for whatever we wanted—toys and snacks were readily available. But as we grow up, we discover that most of us work for money and worry about money. Money is what you need to have everything you want. This is a realistic issue.
Growing up is when you realize that the people you used to admire will also grow old.
When we were young, we particularly admired our parents—Dad could do anything, and Mom could cook all kinds of dishes. As long as we wanted to eat something, she could make it. As we grow up, we discover that our parents have a lot of gray hair and wrinkles, and our height has grown much taller than theirs, and their backs are curved. We realized that the people I used to admire will also grow old.
You may think that growing up is not just about these things, but I think that all growing up may start when you bear loneliness alone.
When you realize that some things must be borne alone, when you realize that you are the pillar of the family, when you cry alone at night, saying why life is so difficult, and then face tomorrow with a smile, that’s true growing up.

People and trees are similar—the more you yearn for sunlight at high places, the deeper its roots will grow underground. —Nietzsche
It’s a good thing to learn to bear loneliness alone, which can exercise self-awareness and willpower. Sometimes, facing the world alone is the best way to grow.
Because those that cannot kill you will make you stronger.
