Should We Douse Childhood Innocence with Self-Doubt, or Inspire Confidence with Enthusiasm?
A child's world is pure, without ambition; without competition; without restraint. They are innocent, bold, and at their most potential.
When you ask, 'Baby, what are your ideals?' he might not yet be clear about the weight behind 'ideal,' but he will confidently and with longing answer you, 'I want to go to space to see; I want to explore aliens; I want to be a superhero and protect the world…'
As a person with experience, every time I hear children's aspirations for the future, the ideals they construct, I find them unrealistic, or even absurdly laughable.
It's certainly naive, and it's delightful.
Then how would you respond? Would you say, 'Wow, that's really interesting, sweetie, you're awesome, how would you like to do that?' and plan with her; or would you laugh at their 'foolish words'; or would you say, 'Say silly things, Mom will teach you to think of something practical.'?
Parents are a child's first teacher, and their most trusted people. Your response will be the source of their confidence, and also the cause of their self-doubt. A parent's enthusiastic response is the greatest support for a child's biggest ideal.
I once met a girl who was introverted, shy, and even self-deprecating. She didn't participate in discussions and wouldn't express her opinions. She also didn't talk about her dreams. Later, after getting to know her, her parents mocked her dreams, and her passionate blood was extinguished by cold water, leaving her only able to watch her unattainable dreams from the faint smoke. How regrettable it would have been not to be able to say her dreams!
Children all crave praise and support,
Getting encouragement leads to a passionate pursuit of dreams;
Getting ridiculed will cause a child to hide their dreams from others.
Children who grow up with praise and support are confident and optimistic. As the saying goes: happy children have good luck.
