Although Bamboo Bird Mushrooms appear ugly and many people don’t recognize them, they are one of the most delicious foods in the world. In the late years of the Northern Song Dynasty, the famous literary giant Su Dongpo loved to eat ‘Bamboo Bird Mushrooms’, saying they were ‘excellent’.


The sub-entity is medium to large, with a cap diameter of 4-10(15)cm, hemispherical, with a sticky center, extending and then recessed, the edge was initially rolled in, then flattened, sticky when wet, without hair, pearly white, carrot yellow or deep orange, thriving in pine tree clusters, with or without a conspicuous ring of color, with a pattern resembling the rings of pine trees. After color fading, it becomes green after injury, especially the edge part becomes more obvious green. The flesh is initially white, then turns carrot yellow. The milky juice is small, orange-red, and finally turns green. The gills are the same color as the cap, slightly dense, with transverse veins in the gill stem, directly growing or slightly elongated, with a trace of green after injury or aging.


The stem is 2-5cm long and 0.7-2cm thick, cylindrical and gradually tapering towards the base, sometimes with an orange-brown depression, the same color as the gills or lighter, green after injury or aging, the inside is soft and becomes hollow, the cross-section of the stem first turns orange-red, then turns dark red. It grows on the ground in the deciduous forests of the autumn and winter, forming mycorrhizal relationships.

Vegetation

Bamboo Bird Mushrooms mainly occur in pine-dominated mountainous areas of Shanxi Province, such as Japanese beech needle forests (Japanese beech forests or wet beech and flame beech mixed forests) on the ground, or coniferous and deciduous mixed forests on the ground. The composition of vegetation includes Japanese beech as the dominant tree, followed by dong pear, chestnut, small fruit rose, firethorn, Japanese maple, and occasionally pine trees, along with white grass, yellow grass, camphor grass, dog-eared grass, and a small amount of wheat grass, sea golden sand and moss plants, in Linli County, Tai Fu Shan is a typical representative.

Under Japanese beech forests, if the Japanese beech, dong pear, Japanese maple, and Japanese cherry trees are sparse, Bamboo Bird Mushrooms occur in large quantities; if there is no shrub and grass layer, or the shrub and grass layer is too dense and shaded, Bamboo Bird Mushrooms will not occur or occur in small quantities. In young forests or old forests, Bamboo Bird Mushrooms rarely occur or do not occur.

Soil



The soil where Bamboo Bird Mushrooms grow includes yellow soil, mountain yellow soil, limestone soil, mountain brown soil and purple soil, with yellow soil and purple soil producing the most and growing the best, especially with a thick layer of fallen leaves and rich organic matter, yellow soil and purple soil are the most productive and best for growth.
