Spectacular! Thousands of Geese Migrate North Along the Mudanjiang River
Recently, with the warming weather, Bohai Town Guanjianzi Courtyard Village in Ning’an City, Mudanjiang, has welcomed a large number of ‘beautiful guests’ – geese. Thousands of bean geese and other migratory birds are stopping over for about a month before continuing their migration north.

As one of the national migratory bird channels, Bohai Town Guanjianzi Courtyard Village in Ning’an City, Mudanjiang, attracts a large number of migratory birds every spring to rest and replenish their energy on the banks of the Mudanjiang River.Bean geese, also known as duck geese, are large migratory birds and are classified as a national level two protected animal.They prefer to live in flocks near the water, returning to northern breeding grounds in the spring after the vernal equinox and flying south for winter after the autumnal equinox. In long-distance travel, geese often fly in an arrow shape and a line shape, while making a ‘kaka’ sound, the sound of bean geese serves as a signal for mutual care, calling, take-off, and rest. It is reported that this year the bean geese arrived half a month earlier than in previous years.Long-distance geese call, thousands of feathers flutter, showcasing a breathtaking ecological landscape.

In recent years, due to the improvement of the natural environment, more migratory birds have stopped over briefly on the route passing through Ning’an.The peak daily sightings include no less than two million bean geese, thousands of wild ducks, a small number of black-crowned night herons, and oriental white storks.They hunt for fish and shrimp in the river or forage for rice grains in the rice paddies.
Guanjianzi Courtyard Village in Ning’an City, Bohai Town, is a famous area for high-quality Xiangshiqian rice production. The area of rice paddies exceeds 50,000 acres. The islands in the river and rice paddies have become ideal resting stations for bean geese. Since 2016, this town has begun to‘’ (Withdraw from farming and return wetlands).It has invested in restoring wetlands covering several hectares near Guanjianzi Courtyard Village and implemented orderly management of the entire waterway through the river chief system, providing better and safer habitats for returning migratory birds.
