Revisit of Critically Endangered Blue-breasted Mallards in Fangshan's Dashitou Lake – Rarer Than Giant Pandas
Extremely endangered Blue-breasted Mallards appeared on the shores of Dashitou Lake in the Red Flag Park, Fangshan District, Beijing yesterday. This bird species has only about 400 individuals worldwide, rarer than giant pandas. Its first visit to Beijing, including Dashitou Lake and Nanhaizi last spring, caused a sensation.

Blue-breasted Mallards are migratory birds that typically migrate from southern wintering grounds to northern breeding grounds in mid-March, and begin to fly south in mid-October. It was once a common migratory bird in China, but with habitat destruction and human hunting, the population has decreased sharply, and it is listed as 'Critically Endangered' level in the 'IUCN Red List of Threatened Species'.
