Widow Dragonflies
Ghost dragonflies are pure black dragonflies, also known as widows. Ghost dragonflies can reach a body length of 10 cm. When it flies past, you can hear a rumbling sound like a bomber plane. Ghost dragonflies have a large body size, and the hooks on their feet are like iron hooks, which is very frightening. Ghost dragonfly male insects have green compound eyes, with yellow spots above the forehead and at the base of the lip, two yellow spots on the chest, and two large yellow spots on the sides. Female insects are larger than male insects, with more developed yellow spots on the abdomen, and brown markings at the base of the wings.
Ghost dragonflies are a very eerie dragonfly. The color is pitch black, the size is very small, the body is light and almost without weight, when flying in the air, if it encounters a slightly larger wind, it probably cannot fly smoothly. They never fly in the sun, and they always choose to stay in dark, uninhabited places, such as the eerie bamboo forest behind old houses, or the reed field beside the cemetery. They fly silently, like weak ghosts.

Many Ghost Dragonfly species have descriptive common names related to their scientific names, including Hawk Eye (Aeshnidae), Fan Tail (Petaluridae), and Stick Tail (Gomphidae) etc. Other traditional names for Ghost Dragonflies, unrelated to classification and facts, such as Buzzing Dragonfly have also been used. In the southern United States, Ghost Dragonflies are also known as ‘Snake Doctor’ because people believe that ghost dragonflies can heal sick snakes. Also because of their black bodies and wings, which look a bit ghostly, they are also called ‘Widow’.
