Why Do Tigers Eat People? Experts Say There Are Two Reasons
Everyone says humans are higher animals, and there isn't any animal in the natural world that can be compared to humans. However, the natural world has so many creatures, and even though they may not be as intelligent as humans, they possess their own kind of wisdom. For example, today we will talk about tigers.
This large cat species is currently considered the most evolved cat species. They have enormous bodies and strong predatory abilities, with adult tigers weighing several hundred pounds, and they generally act alone. When they live in groups, it's usually during the breeding season, when female tigers and male tigers live together.
Now, tiger habitats are being heavily disrupted by humans, and their habitats are becoming increasingly scarce. People are also recognizing the importance of this matter and learning to protect it. That's why you often see captive tigers these days, while wild ones are becoming rarer. Early on, these animals were primarily found in their own habitats and in large numbers, which led to incidents of tigers eating people.
In the 1950s, a village experienced several incidents of tigers eating people. After an old woman was eaten by a tiger, a Yao woman was eaten in the same place. These incidents continued for several occurrences, and most of those injured were elderly women. Later, villagers hired several people to catch the eating tiger.
It took a lot of effort to catch the tiger, and fortunately, it died in the hands of the villagers, preventing it from harming people further. After it died, villagers discovered that the tiger weighed close to 300 pounds.
Later, in the 1950s, a tiger also ate a woman who was fetching water, and she was dragged away. During the process, she was conscious and grabbed at other objects to try to stop it. The tiger found this method difficult and decided to try a different approach. However, it didn't realize that the woman's silver hairpin had broken its teeth, and the woman managed to escape. It took her a month to be able to walk properly afterwards.
In that era, there were many such incidents, and people wondered why tigers were always killed when they were discovered eating people. Experts said there were two reasons. First, when tigers start approaching human settlements and begin to prey on humans, it means they have no other wild animals to eat, so they turn to humans.
Second, once they succeed, these animals will consider humans as food and think it's a better way to hunt. Because these animals are intelligent, they will also teach these techniques to their companions and children. If this situation occurs, it will pose a great threat to human survival. Given their large size, humans are intelligent, and they can also harm vulnerable people like children and the elderly, so many tigers are killed when they are discovered eating people.
