Yunlong Lake, Xuzhou: Second Batch of Sanderlings – A Stunning Sight of Five to Six Dozen
Spring warmth and blossoming, entering the season of migratory birds flying north, photography enthusiasts will always come to Yunlong Lake to observe and photograph birds. On March 6th, the first batch of Sanderlings passed through Yunlong Lake for a rest. On the 11th, to the surprise of bird lovers, a large group of Sanderlings flew into Yunlong Lake, no less than five or six dozen! Such a large group, is a first!
Five days apart
A second batch of Sanderlings flies to Yunlong Lake

On March 6th morning, the first batch of northbound Sanderlings landed at Yunlong Lake, opening the winter migratory bird north flight chapter. The first batch of migratory birds flying north heralds the entry into spring, the return of warm weather, and the southward-migrating birds begin to return to the distant lands to breed offspring. Many bird photography enthusiasts in our city closely monitor the movements of migratory birds, and daily in Yunlong Lake, eagerly awaiting more migratory birds to rest.
'Lake' emerged
Sanderlings kept a distance from the Grey Gulls
This group of Sanderlings, being new arrivals, although numerous, has an advantage, but for these outsiders, the long-standing Silver Gulls who have wintered in Yunlong Lake, are a bullying situation, they drive them away if they approach; because 'it's alright to hide from those who can't bear it,' the pitiful Sanderlings had to hide at the lakeside near the west road, keeping a distance from the Silver Gull group.
This group of black and white feathered outsiders are naturally timid and keep a distance from humans. Now, they can only take refuge on the west lakeside. But this allows more citizens to admire them, these rare and adorable little elves, letting people feast their eyes, which is a small surprise in spring.
A magnificent sight
Five or six dozen Sanderlings are pleasing to the eye
How many Sanderlings are there in total? Frequent bird photographers Yang Hongwu estimated more than 50; he counted 57 in the most photos he took, and Liu Zhenrong counted 59; and the photographic reporter counted 62 in the photos he took himself. Bird identification is so difficult, they constantly fly back and forth, and sometimes they are slightly distracted and enter the lens, making it impossible to accurately count, five or six dozen is definitely not wrong!
On the morning of the 11th, spring sunshine and warm wind, Yunlong Lake had many citizens coming to enjoy the spring outing. And this group of distant guests, particularly attracted attention, they are obviously different from the Silver Gulls and Red-Billed Gulls that have wintered in Yunlong Lake every year: The graceful figures with black and white feathers, long curved beaks, are so beautiful and charming, it's hard not to admire: What kind of bird is this? Really beautiful!
On the west shore of Purple Island, not only photographers are here to photograph birds, but children are also coming to observe birds. Ms. Yang saw the report in the Morning Post and specially came with her family of three to watch birds. 'Ms. Yang said, 'I watched the bird so beautiful, unlike the gulls I saw in Yunlong Lake before, and I came with my husband and daughter to see it. The children were so happy to see these birds!' 'Our home is near Yunlong Lake, as a citizen of Xuzhou, I am proud of Yunlong Lake. I think Yunlong Lake is more beautiful than West Lake in Hangzhou.'
Long-time bird photographers Liu Zhenrong and others are most familiar with the birds of Yunlong Lake. They said that in recent years, Yunlong Lake and Xuzhou's ecological environment have become increasingly good, attracting more and more birds, especially during the migratory bird season last year, it's rare to see Great Cormorants, making them proud of their hometown.
'I look forward to Yunlong Lake becoming like Kunming's Dianchi Lake, known throughout the country because of birds.' Liu Zhenrong said, 'The more birds come, the more it can make Yunlong Lake's reputation far-reaching, let more people love Yunlong Lake.'
