Xiamen's Most 'Thriving' Ancient Temple Offers Free Tickets and Incense, Drawing a Flood of Tourists
With the rapid development of society, our stress is increasing, and more and more people like to travel to relax. However, many scenic spots are overcrowded due to their popularity, and our original mood is unconsciously ruined. At this point, we need to choose a quiet scenic spot to relieve our stress.
Xiamen is a coastal city in China with beautiful scenery and four seasons of spring, attracting tourists every year. We usually go to places like Gulangyu and Xiamen University, and Putuo Temple is one of them. Putuo Temple is located in the Wulaofeng area of Xiamen, and its incense is very vibrant, partly because of Putuo Temple's regulation – it offers a 'jinhua' (incense) for free along with the ticket. This is due to the beliefs of the people of (Minnan) who worship Guan Yin Bodhisattva, which is particularly special. The 'jinhua' is offered to the Great Hall of the Treasure (Da Xiong Bao Dian) of Mount Putuo.
The Great Hall of the Treasure houses three Buddha statues: Amitabha Buddha, Guanyin Bodhisattva, and Manjusri Bodhisattva. It is also the place where all the monks at Putuo Temple chant scriptures, and the morning and evening recitations are held here. Listening to the temple bells and chanting scriptures is a compulsory course for every monk at Putuo Temple.
The Da Bei Dian (Great Hall of the Future) is octagonal in shape, with each corner pointing towards the sky, and the distance between the two corners is consistent. The Da Bei Temple was established in the Ming Dynasty and has a history of over 400 years. Due to its long history, the original wooden structure has deteriorated, so it was rebuilt into a modern concrete and steel structure to preserve the Great Hall of the Future.
Xiamen's Putuo Temple has many attractions, but no matter which hall or which spot, it undoubtedly showcases the Buddhist atmosphere and grandeur, which is why so many tourists come to worship.
