Dongdun Village is located in the southeast of Ningjin Subdistrict, Shidao Management Zone. It was built in the Jiajing years of the Ming Dynasty and has a history of 500 years. It got its name because of a watchtower built south of the village about 500 meters away to defend against Japanese pirates.
Dongdun Village is the hometown of former Vice Premier of the State Council, Gu Mu. The village is ancient, natural, steady, and majestic, with deep red cultural heritage. Most of the buildings in the village are made of seagrass houses, with nearly a thousand seagrass houses currently existing. In recent years, Dongdun Village has relied on its deep seagrass house culture and the red historical site of Gu Mu's hometown to promote revolutionary spirit and traditional culture. It has renovated Gu Mu's old residence and protected seagrass houses around it, built Gu Mu Biography Exhibition Hall and Shidao Folk Exhibition Hall, forming a 'one courtyard, one theme, one exhibition hall, one characteristic' seagrass house theme courtyard cluster. Gu Mu's old residence is now listed as 'Weihai City Patriotic Education Base' and 'Shandong Province Party History Education Base'.
Dongdun Village has also been awarded 'Chinese Traditional Village,' 'First Batch Demonstration Village of 'Rural Memory' Project,' 'Shandong Province Beautiful Village,' 'Shandong Province Tourist Characteristic Village,' and 'Shandong Province Beautiful Livable Village' titles. Traditional crafts such as embroidery, paper cutting, and face-making are still passed down.
At the same time, Dongdun Village has firmly grasped the opportunity of the rural revitalization strategy. It has fully utilized the 300-odd seagrass houses and nearly a thousand acres of land obtained from the village reconstruction and replacement, with seagrass homestays, characteristic coastal cuisine, and red tourism as its highlights. It emphasized agriculture as the foundation, industrial integration, and the main functional body of driving development. With farmers' cooperatives as the main carrier, allowing farmers to fully participate and benefit, through models such as shareholding cooperation and land equity quantification, allowing farmers to share the benefits of industrial growth.
'Never forget your original aspirations, and you will always succeed' – with sincere hearts, come to Dongdun Village to walk around and receive a red education.
