Which Black Sea Harbors Does Russia Have? It's Clear from the Map
Russia’s coastline of approximately 3,380 kilometers is the largest in the world. While Russia’s coastline is long, a significant portion lies in the unproductive Barents Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean, often within bays. Russia has few strategically important ports; the most notable is St. Petersburg, situated in the Finnish Gulf, Novorossiysk on the Black Sea, Murmansk in the Barents Sea, and Vladivostok (Russian Far East) on the Sea of Japan, as well as Novorossiysk in the Black Sea (excluding the Crimean Peninsula’s important port of Sevastopol).

In this article, we mainly discuss the Black Sea ports, with Sochi being notably famous.
The name ‘Sochi’ has gained worldwide attention since 2014, when the 22nd Winter Olympic Games were held in Russia’s Black Sea city of Sochi. Sochi’s victory over Pyeongchang, South Korea, to host the games was crucial for Russia.
Sochi is located on the Black Sea coast in southwestern Russia, at the foot of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, with the city’s southern boundary about 50 kilometers south of Sochi is Georgia. Georgia is one of the former Soviet republics and is currently in conflict with Russia, launching the Five-Day War in August 2008 under American provocation. Although Russia could not eliminate Georgia, Georgia still poses a significant strategic threat to Russia. In this situation, the existence of Sochi can effectively suppress American strategic pressure on Russia through Georgia.

However, for Russians, Sochi is famous primarily as Russia’s most renowned health resort. In 1898, oxygen-hydrogen springs were discovered in Sochi, leading to the city becoming a major health resort for the Russian Empire (and later the Soviet Union/Russia).
