They Say It's 'Japan's Number One' Onsen Resort – I Found the Ultimate Enjoyment of Life!
The service of Asaba is unparalleled, like a history spanning three centuries, offering endless delight and nostalgia.

Asaba, a luxury brand hotel under the Rohan Shacho Group's La Prairie Spa, is located in Shusenji, the central part of Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. With a history of over three centuries, it is one of the oldest hotels still existing in Japan. Legend says that a monk named 'Kobo Daishi' (Honganji) drilled holes into river stones using a single drill method approximately one thousand two hundred and eighty years ago. After being acquired by La Prairie Spa, it was gradually renovated while preserving its original appearance, replacing decayed wood with new timber and upgrading various hardware details. Upon entering the hotel, you step onto a stone pathway and are greeted by a courtyard entrance framed by ancient pine trees, instantly evoking a sense of comfort – this is the essence of Asaba's charm.

Check-in was handled by a 'Wajimada' (hostess), whose meticulous service moved me to tears. The hotel's three-century-old commitment to guest service is perfectly embodied in her actions.

Two chairs were placed in the inner hall of the room, allowing you to enjoy the view outside at any time.
The 'Wajimada' prepared exquisite tea set.

La Prairie Spa has always been my favorite boutique hotel; its hallmark is the epitome of composure and elegance.

The room has a hallway leading to the lounge.

The lounge chairs are different from the hotel's traditional Japanese style, adding a touch of French romance. Coffee, tea, and pastries were prepared in the lounge.

Japanese tea flowers were placed in every corner.

Asaba prepares abundant meals daily based on fresh, local ingredients. Dinner and breakfast the following day were served in the room, with the 'Wajimada' coordinating the meal times. Even the dinner menu was handwritten by the hotel owner, Mr. Asaba, emphasizing the guests' importance. The entire meal, under the 'Wajimada''s sincere service, was truly exceptional, surpassing even the three-rice level.

Shusenji is a place to unwind, but if you're visiting, choose the most authentic Japanese ryokan for the ultimate Japanese service – Asaba is the only choice.
