Costa Maya: Mayan Pyramids in the Tropical Rainforest

Costa Maya, located in the middle of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, near Cancun, was once the largest and most prosperous city of the ancient Maya Empire and its political and economic center. Today, it is a popular stop for many Caribbean cruises, and the pyramids outside the city have become popular tourist attractions. Many tourists from the island also visit it.

Chacchoben Maya pyramid ruins are located in a tropical rainforest. When I went, it was hot and humid, unlike the pyramids outside Mexico City.

Chacchoben Maya pyramid was built approximately around the year 300 AD. 'Chacchoben' means 'red maize'.

The Maya civilization originated around 2600 BC, belonging to the Neolithic era. The Maya did not have copper, let alone iron, at that time.

The peak of the Maya civilization was approximately between 300 and 900 AD, during which it created a highly developed urban civilization.

In the 16th century, the Aztec Empire, the inheritors of Maya culture, was destroyed by the plagues brought by the Spanish Empire, and many residents were killed, ultimately leading to its demise.
