Essay | Ru Confucian Original Clothes depend on quality, food on quantity.People's cultivation depends on these four measures:Volume, belly, courage, and capacity.
Volume
As the saying goes: reason doesn't depend on loudness, but on being moderate. The volume of a person's speech reveals their cultivation.Lu Xun said: 'A loud voice is a natural instinct; a quiet voice is civilization.'When generals face each other, Zhang Fei breaks the Danyang Bridge with a shout, while Zhuge Liang debates with him calmly and eloquently; Zhuge Liang's clever arguments and sharp wit are no match for Liu Bei's taciturnity and simplicity.A general's forehead can run a horse, and a minister's belly can hold a boat. People with great capacity are tolerant and generous.A drop of ink in a cup of water immediately changes the color of the water; The same drop of ink in the ocean doesn't change its appearance. The sea and the cup can both hold water, but their capacities are very different. As Fukuzawa Yukichi said: 'If your heart is small, all small things become big; if your heart is big, all big things become small.'A gentleman is not confused, a benevolent person is not worried, a brave person is not afraid.
Lu Xun said, 'A brave person must achieve two things:'
The first is an open mind.As the saying goes: 'Do not do anything that makes you feel ashamed, and do not disturb people at night.'As long as your heart is pure, you will not be afraid of darkness.'He is strong because of his strength, and a gentle breeze blows through the mountains and streams; He is arrogant because of his arrogance, and the bright moon illuminates the vast river. Secondly, he is not controlled by low desires. As it is said: 'The sea contains all rivers, and greatness comes from tolerance.'If you are attracted to material desires, even steel will melt into a soft and tempting object. Most importantly, you must always maintain a lofty spirit. You can lose to the difficulties in front of you, but you cannot lose your spirit. In *The Essentials of Change* by Lü Xueyi, there are six methods for discerning people.
One of them is called 'Using anger to test one's integrity.'
When you are angry, you can most clearly see a person's true nature.People of high quality often know how to control their anger.Mr. Hu Shi had two elder brothers who got married after adulthood. The elderly mother lived with Mr. Hu Shi and his sister-in-law.The sister-in-law was the most incompetent and least knowledgeable person. The other sister-in-law was very capable but narrow-minded. The stepmothers often quarreled with each other because of disagreements, but they couldn't make a scene in front of their mother-in-law.The sister-in-law was angry, but she didn't speak or answer, she just frowned. The other sister-in-law was angry and noisy, which was frightening. The mother was in the middle, but she was always kind and patient.Mr. Hu Shi said: 'The most unpleasant thing in the world is a face full of anger; the most shameful thing in the world is to show your anger to others. This is worse than scolding.'People with high quality must maintain basic politeness even when angry.Don't be angry and resentful, and don't complain. They won't let negative emotions affect those around them.
