Analects of Confucius - For Governance: Master Yu said, 'At thirty one should establish oneself; at forty one should not be perplexed; at fifty one should know the mandate of Heaven.'

This roughly means that when a person has reached thirty, they will have achieved some accomplishments; when they reach forty, they will know in which direction to move forward; and when they reach fifty, they will be able to see their future development.

However, many people are not successful until they are in their thirties and forties, and they often find themselves most confused in their lives. They don't know what to do or what is most suitable for them.

Our old master, Guigu, has already said two key things for a person to achieve success. If people can understand them, they will certainly prosper and their lives will become smoother.

First: A wise man should not use his own shortcomings, but rather use the strengths of others to cover his weaknesses.

This means that anyone who wants to achieve success must understand his own strengths and weaknesses, know his advantages and disadvantages relative to others, and then make full use of his strengths.There is a person in our village who bought a house and a car shortly after starting his job. Interestingly, he didn't seem outstanding compared to others. However, he did say that he was grateful to be a 'cripple' – he had injured his leg falling from a mountain as a child.

One time, I chatted with him and asked him why he developed so quickly. He was surprised by my answer and said it was probably because he was a 'cripple'.

Famous American thinker W.P. Frost once said,

It is better to know what to exclude and what to include, than to build a wall.If a person can quickly know his strengths and weaknesses, then his development will be clear and fast.

Therefore, if people are still unsuccessful in middle age, they should take a good look at themselves and compare them to others. They should try to develop their strengths and their lives will become smoother.Second: A wise man does not use his own shortcomings, but uses the strengths of others to cover his weaknesses.”

This is an extension of the previous statement. We said that when we know our strengths and weaknesses, we should make full use of our strengths. What about our weaknesses? Should we ignore them and let them develop naturally? For small problems and small flaws, we can ignore them, but if the problem is too big and affects our future lives, we cannot ignore it.So, Guigu proposed,

This seems simple, but many people haven't realized it in their middle age, always thinking that they have to learn everything, and as a result, they've become 'all-purpose failures'.

Eventually, he began to complain: 'I am so capable, why doesn't the leader promote me?'At that time, the old leader from the neighboring department couldn't help but say to him,

You are indeed capable, but you cannot compare yourself to a team!

Xiao Liu realized his mistake – he was so obsessed with filling his shortcomings that he became a 'running dog'.

Mr. Xunzi said,

A gentleman is not distinguished by his difference, but by his willingness to borrow.When I was young, I always felt sorry for some leaders who couldn't get promoted. But after I was in my middle age, I realized,”

It's not necessary for a leader to know everything, as long as he can use the strengths of others to achieve his goals, he can reach a higher position.
