Can Yoga Teachers Cure All Diseases?

Lots of people have been private messaging me asking for medical knowledge lately, and I've also been talking about how yoga instructors don't always fully understand the extent of their training in healthcare. It's a really interesting discussion, and I've had discussions about it in classes I've taken before, plus I have some personal insights to share. I'm not a master, just a personal perspective, so please consider it carefully,

Yoga is a health industry?

Although we may have heard that yoga leads to enlightenment, three mudras, improving fire, opening chakras, and achieving enlightenment, I can continue to list them. However, should viewing yoga as a health industry be wrong?

Hada yoga emphasizes exercising through posturals, eliminating body pain to allow continued progression to life energy control or meditation, ultimately achieving those aforementioned states. Therefore, pursuing physical health is a completely harmless direction, regardless of where you ultimately want to stop,

And I completely believe,

  • A complete and thorough yoga practice can absolutely benefit a person's physical and mental health,

Specialized skills have their own expertise, and some things need to be left to the professionals,

However, when yoga meets medical practices or medical expectations, we need to re-evaluate where the correct positioning lies,

In reality, when students first experience physical ailments, they may seek help from a yoga instructor instead of a doctor, perhaps because students regularly attend yoga classes and assume the teacher must be knowledgeable. Conversely, students don't regularly see doctors,

So, what would be the normal process?

Specialized skills have their own expertise, and if possible, when ailed, the first step should be to seek professional doctors, including encouraging teachers to advise students to see doctors (especially in complex or severe cases),Even if a complete and thorough yoga practice can bring physical and mental health benefits (still emphasizing the harmlessness), we still need a doctor's diagnosis and assessment before determining the cause. Psychological issues can be addressed by psychologists or counselors, while physical issues can be addressed by orthopedic doctors or physical therapists. After confirming the cause, long-term maintenance and repair can be achieved through yoga—a targeted approach, ensuring the medicine hits the disease instead of… you know,

When you are a teacher,

I think we all want to help students, but first, we need to clearly understand the scope of expertise and the appropriate applications. It's appropriate to view yoga practice as a long-term measure to improve and maintain physical and mental health, and bravely encouraging students with physical ailments to seek professional medical assistance is a worthwhile endeavor,

But can teachers do more?

The answer is definitely yes. More and more teachers are now undertaking studies in physical therapy, psychology, and other medical fields,However, we must also recognize that the more we learn (and the more money we spend), the less we know. When students seek help, we must be extremely cautious in our assessment and offer assistance within our limited knowledge, while always remembering to monitor and report any changes, and urging students to seek a doctor's evaluation if any abnormalities are detected. It's regrettable when we misdiagnose, such as when you only know 'pelvic floor syndrome' and think every butt and leg pain is caused by it,

When you have a hammer, you should be careful not to turn everything into nails.

But the positive aspect of learning more is that it allows us to pay more attention to the individual and detail when designing courses, preventing many issues before they occur, or being more vigilant in noticing student's subtle but potentially serious issues, and urging them to seek medical attention (even if we cannot handle them ourselves). This vigilance can help us assist students even more, or even save their lives,When you are a student,

Finally, when you seek help from a teacher, and the teacher analyzes the situation based on their knowledge and recommends you see a doctor, don't think the teacher is bad. Instead, this is a responsible teacher's approach,

As a yoga practitioner and teacher, I think yoga is wonderful, and we should never underestimate the benefits of yoga, but we shouldn't expand yoga teachers' responsibilities and duties endlessly. Of course, there are many outstanding teachers who can provide us with help or guide us in this direction, but we must always maintain a critical perspective,
