New Way to Eat Wonton Wrappers: Half Steamed, Half Fried, Simpler Than Dumplings, Not Available to Buy Outside
Previously, it was hard to distinguish between wontons and guotian – what exactly were they? Later, I found out they were both types of noodles, just with different names depending on the region. In southern China, they're called wontons, while in the north, they're called guotian. Both wontons and guotian are typically filled with meat, like pork and egg, or even vegetarian fillings such as vegetables. Unlike dumplings, guotian usually has a single filling. Eating too many guotian can be quite heavy. Today, I'm sharing a special snack with wonton wrappers that's similar to sweet dumpling flavor, because they both use glutinous rice fillings. They're soft, sticky, and savory to eat.

Ingredients
300g glutinous rice, wonton wrappers, sausage, dried shiitake mushrooms, green onion, soy sauce, aged vinegar, oyster sauce
1First, pour 300g of glutinous rice into water and let it soak for at least 5 hours. After the rice is soaked, rinse it once again and drain the water. Spread the rice evenly on a steaming rack, and poke several small holes in the rice with your finger to allow steam to circulate. Cover with a lid and steam over high heat for 15-20 minutes.

2While the glutinous rice is steaming, prepare some ingredients: slice 1 sausage into small pieces, slice 3 dried shiitake mushrooms after soaking in water, and chop some green onion.
3After the glutinous rice is cooked, transfer it to a bowl and add the chopped ingredients. Add soy sauce, aged vinegar, and oyster sauce for seasoning. Then, mix everything thoroughly with a chopstick.

4Because the glutinous rice is very sticky and tends to clump together, it's difficult to mix it with a chopstick. Wait until the rice isn't too hot and then you'll need to use your hands to break up the clumps.

5Finally, wrap the glutinous rice in wonton wrappers, just like making dumplings. If the wrapper is dry, you can dip a little water into the wrapper before sealing.

Tips Summary

1Glutinous rice must be soaked in water before steaming to ensure it's soft and doesn't become undercooked.
2Since sausage and seasonings are already salty, you don't need to add extra salt.
3You can also use dumpling wrappers to make this recipe.
