Mythical Bird (Black-billed Far Eastern Curlew) Reappears at Longle Min River Mouth National AAA-Level Tourist Scenic Area

This is the ‘Mythical Bird’ – Black-billed Far Eastern Curlew.
Around 10:00 AM, the Min River entered the sea at the highest tide of the day. The rapid rise of the tide washed floating organisms up onto the sandbars of the in the wetlands. After the slow ebb tide, the accumulated water in the sandbars became a venue for waterbirds such as seagulls to forage and play.

Black-billed Far Eastern Curlew, also known as Chinese Far Eastern Curlew, is named because its first discovery (in 1861) was on the mainland of China. This bird has a black, pointed beak, with males having snowy white feathers and females having grayish-white feathers. Due to its elusive tracks and a population size even rarer than pandas, the Black-billed Far Eastern Curlew is currently classified as a critically endangered bird by ornithologists, known as the ‘Mythical Bird’.

From the long-range lens, you can observe four Black-billed Far Eastern Curlews accompanying a group of Red-billed Curlews in foraging. During the feeding process, the male Black-billed Far Eastern Curlew would occasionally feed small fish and shrimp to the female, which is a very touching scene.
Min River Estuary National Wetland Park is located in Longzhao District, Fuzhou, and is an important wintering ground for migratory birds.
