Red panda, a species of the small panda family and small panda genus. It looks like a cat, but fatter than a cat, with a reddish-brown body. It has a round face, a short snout, and white markings on its cheeks. It has large, erect ears. Its legs are thick and short, black-brown in color. Its tail is long, thick and fluffy, with 12 dark-red rings. The tip of the tail is dark brown. It crawls; its front and hind feet both have 5 toes; it is dioecious. Its skull is high and round; the tympanic bulla is relatively flattened; the postorbital process is not fully developed or absent; the sagittal crest is low; it has pneumatic bones; the upper palate is tall and arched with an inner depression; the middle wing bone is shortened; the coronal process is obvious and hook-shaped.
The red panda mainly lives in coniferous-broadleaf mixed forests or evergreen broadleaf forests with bamboo thickets below an altitude of 3000 meters. The temperature in these areas is generally below 25°C in summer, and 0~10°C in winter. It has a large activity range, and in summer the red panda often lives in shady valleys with streams, while in winter it lives in sunny river valleys and grassy slopes near villages, even down to the snow after it falls. It especially likes to sunbathe on sunny cliffs or the tops of large trees, so local Sichuan people call it 'shan men dun er'.
