What was the cause of death of panda cub Lu Lu? How did panda cub Lu Lu die? Scene photos

Regarding the death of panda cub ‘Lu Lu’
On April 9, 2020, panda cub ‘Lu Lu’ (born August 10, 2019, female) died due to strangulation from rope entanglement around its neck after using a climbing rope. Around 2:00 AM on the 9th, ‘Lu Lu’ was playing alone on the outdoor playground of the Shenshiping Panda Center Kindergarten, climbing onto a wooden frame with hanging toys, and then the cub wrapped the rope attached to the ball around its body, beginning to struggle. Within a few minutes, the cub stopped struggling and unfortunately died. Due to the late-night incident and the difficulty in distinguishing between the cub’s resting posture on the wooden frame and the entanglement posture, the night patrol personnel failed to discover any abnormalities. In the morning, after the Shenshiping Panda Center Kindergarten Nursery Feeding Point staff visited the feeding point, they observed most panda cubs resting and found no abnormalities (the deceased cub was facing away from the observation area, making it difficult to see its face, appearing to be hanging on the wooden frame). The staff arrived at the cat house playground at around 9:00 and discovered that the cub’s neck and forelimbs were wrapped with the rope attached to the hanging toy, through contact and observation, it was initially judged to be dead, and immediately notified the veterinarian; after examination by the veterinarian, samples were collected for testing.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of panda cub ‘Lu Lu’. This incident also fully recognizes that there are certain omissions in our management of panda safety. We will draw lessons from this incident to further strengthen the safety inspection and assessment of enriched items for young pandas, thoroughly eliminate security hazards in the park; at the same time, strengthen night patrol, avoid the occurrence of similar events.
