Foreign Media: Scientists Discover Two Rare Six-Gilled Sharks
Global Network Technology Report by Lin DindiAccording to the foreign media CNET, citing the PLOS ONE journal, recently, scientists have discovered two new rare six-gilled sharks off the west coast of the Indian Ocean near Madagascar and Zanzibar.

At the Newcastle University Elasmobranch Research Laboratory in Germany, lead author and shark researcher Simon Weigmann described the double discovery as 'absolutely astonishing', and described them as serrated-nosed sharks – Pliotrema kajae and Pliotrema annae'.
The paper details these two new species, these unusual sharks each with six gills on each side, while typically in rat-finned sharks there are five.
Weigmann said, 'In the west coast of the Indian Ocean, our knowledge of sharks is still very scarce. However, considering the known depth distribution, these two new species may be affected by fishing activities.'
