Giant Panda Cub Dies After Suffocation, Missed Two Rescue Opportunities?
Giant pandas are national treasures in China, adorable and loved worldwide. There are only 600 giant pandas globally, so countries often lease pandas from China. Recently, a giant panda cub died tragically after becoming entangled in a rope and suffocating!
On April 9th, giant panda 'LuLu' (born August 10, 2019, female) at the Shenshiping Panda Base died due to strangulation caused by a climbing ball rope entanglement.

Around 2:00 AM on April 9th, 'LuLu' was seen climbing to a wooden frame with climbing toys in the outdoor playground of the Shenshiping Panda Base kindergarten, and then the cub began to struggle as it wrapped the rope of the climbing ball around its body. After several minutes, the cub stopped struggling and unfortunately died. Due to the late night incident and the difficulty in distinguishing the cub's entanglement position from its resting position on the wooden frame, the night patrol personnel failed to notice the abnormality.
On April 10th, the official Weibo account of the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center released a statement: 'Regarding the death of giant panda 'LuLu', we are deeply saddened. This event also fully recognizes that we have certain omissions in giant panda safety management. We will draw lessons from this event, further strengthen the safety inspection and assessment of young giant pandas' release environment, and thoroughly eliminate security hazards in the park; at the same time, strengthen night patrol, to avoid such incidents happening.'
Currently, there are still many wild pandas, scattered and living in the known but not included in the protection network giant panda habitats or potential habitats. The 'Fourth Survey Report on Giant Pandas in Sichuan Province' shows that as of the end of 2013, of the 1387 wild giant pandas distributed in Sichuan, 21.85% were not included in the network of nature reserves. Calculated based on this, about 300 'scattered pandas' live in Sichuan, and another 300 live in Shaanxi and Gansu. In 2018, in response to the situation of giant panda habitat fragmentation, the Green Development Association of China supported the 'China Panda Village' team to establish 'China Panda Protection Land • Forest Post', to promote the protection of scattered pandas and their habitat biodiversity, and submitted a draft proposal 'Regarding Strengthening the Protection of Scattered Pandas and Their Habitats' for the Two Sessions.Half Moon Bay News Compilation; Material Source: Beijing Daily Client, Western Metropolis Daily, @China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, @Burning News etc.
