Dialogue: Ecological Photographer | Lü Zijie: Using His Camera to Protect Birds in Xinjiang

In spring, everything sprouts, and the birds have also arrived at the breeding season. On a day in February, a white eyed grosbeak in Xinjiang saw another 'same kind' and fought with it. Unknowingly, this white eyed grosbeak fought against was a car rearview mirror self. Photographer Lü Zijie happened to use a camera to record this dramatic scene.

This picture, named 'Mirror of Birds', won the first prize in the 'Urban Wildlife' photography competition – the first phase, and was awarded third prize.
Because of his love for them, he became a bird photographer.
Lü Zijie is a worker in the 71st detachment of Qitianyi, Xinjiang, New Source County. Besides doing his job well, Lü Zijie also photographs, makes charts, and promotes cultural activities... He is a well-known 'cultural talent' in the surrounding area.
Young Lü Zijie liked to draw when he was young. After joining the work, he gradually fell in love with photography. Because Lü Zijie couldn't afford a camera when he first joined the work, he first learned how to develop photos, and he basically learned all the photo development methods at that time. Gradually, after accumulating some living funds, Lü Zijie bought a small-sized camera and started taking photos and recording those touching events. In a photography competition held in a county, Lü Zijie's photography works won the first prize, and the county magistrate and the literary and artistic committee members all viewed the photography exhibition, and highly evaluated Lü Zijie's works. This photography competition also boosted Lü Zijie's confidence, allowing him to walk further and further on the path of photography.

Among all the shooting objects, Lü Zijie liked to shoot birds the most. Because he loved to shoot birds, Lü Zijie also became a bird expert. Great cormorant, sand grouse, pink flocking bird, white eyed grosbeak, western black-shouldered crow... For these birds in Xinjiang, Lü Zijie is like a book.
Lü Zijie believes that birds are like elves. Admiring their wing feathers trembling, listening to their melodious songs, even if you shuttle through concrete jungles all day long, you will still feel like a spring breeze, and you can still enjoy the benefits of nature in a bustling city. Birds are like angels sent by nature, flapping their wings and helping us return to our hearts.
In Lü Zijie's lens, birds either dance among the sky and earth, or freely enjoy the gifts of nature, or carefully nurture their offspring... Besides common birds, Lü Zijie also photographed rare birds such as the lesser black-backed gull.

To capture the beautiful moments of birds, long-term squatting and shooting is a daily routine for Lü Zijie. What he couldn't forget was an experience of guarding the lesser black-backed gull. The lesser black-backed gull is a relatively rare and beautiful bird in Lü Zijie's hometown. One day, he found a group of lesser black-backed gulls incubating eggs in Congnuli River. In order to ensure the safety of the lesser black-backed gull's incubation, Lü Zijie guarded the riverbank for ten days and made warning signs to let everyone protect the lesser black-backed gull. However, unfortunately, just when the young birds were about to hatch, the bird eggs were taken away, which made Lü Zijie very sad.
To better promote the awareness of loving and protecting birds, Lü Zijie also participated in the 'Bird Week' event held in the county in 2019. He carefully selected a series of photos he had taken before and donated them to the organizer for publicity and exhibition. He hoped to appeal to more people to participate in loving and protecting birds.

Over the years, Lü Zijie not only used his lens to record the beautiful figures of Xinjiang birds, but also used his lens to protect these birds.
