Hengdian Film City, the World’s Largest Film Base (aka ‘Big Hengguo’)

Mentioning Hengdian Film City, many people are probably familiar with it. Hengdian Film City is located in Hengdian Town, Dongyang City, Zhejiang Province. In 1996, it was built to accompany the historical epic film ‘The Opium War’. Guangzhou Street is such a small town that was little known at that time, and it gradually built Hong Kong Street, Ming Qing Garden, Qin Wang Palace, Qingming Shanghe Tu, and Round Ming New Garden, etc., dozens of film shooting bases.

Currently, Hengdian Film City is a national 5A-level tourist attraction and the largest film shooting base in the world, and it has been dubbed ‘China Hollywood’. The success of Hengdian Film City is truly a miracle, and this miracle has been witnessed by everyone. Of course, the efforts during this period are also undeniable. To build these shooting bases, thousands of acres of wastelands were opened up, and among them, 13 mountain peaks were blasted for the construction of the Ming and Qing Gardens.

Hengdian Film City is very large in scale, and some people even describe it as ‘Big Hengguo’. Why is it called this way?

It is reported that the entire Hengdian Film City covers an area of more than 30 square kilometers. If you have been here to play before, it is difficult to finish visiting the Ming Qing Garden in one day, because the Ming Qing Garden was built 1:1 based on the Beijing Forbidden City.

The Ming Qing Garden is the main filming location for ancient costume dramas. The layout of the buildings here is exactly the same as the Beijing Forbidden City, and the buildings are meticulously crafted, and the details are also very well imitated, which gives people a feeling of entering the Beijing Purple Forbidden City.

The earliest filming base was Guangzhou Street, and two years later it became Hong Kong Street. Now Guangzhou Street and Hong Kong Street are one of Hengdian Film City’s classic scenic areas. Many of the Nationalist dramas we see were filmed here. The streets and alleys on both sides are very realistic, and they skillfully recreate the style of the Fragrant Harbor and the Old City of Guangzhou in the 1840s.

I personally like the Guangzhou Street and Hong Kong Street scenic area, and I almost always go for a walk on this street and alley when I come to Hengdian. Many dramas were filmed here, such as ‘Hidden Master’, ‘Century Regret’, ‘Razor Edge’ were all filmed here.

Since the first film and television drama ‘The Opium War’ was filmed in 1996, more than 3000 film and television dramas have been filmed in Hengdian Film City, and it has developed from a single film shooting base to a film tourism theme park, and it has become a national 5A-level tourist attraction. Although the ticket price is relatively expensive, it is definitely worth a visit.

In addition to the Ming Qing Garden built like the Beijing Forbidden City, a ‘Round Ming New Garden’ has also been built here. The entire garden draws on the essence of the prosperous Beijing Round Ming New Garden, and it has carried out a series of innovations. The entire garden covers an area of more than 7000 acres and has a total investment of up to 30 billion. It took three years to build. Many netizens say ‘It really deserves to be ‘Big Hengguo’, its strength is so impressive.’

Inside Round Ming New Garden there are four gardens, namely New Round Ming Garden, New Changchun Garden, New Qichun Yard and New Changchun Garden, which correspond to the Spring Garden, Summer Garden, Autumn Garden and Winter Garden in the Round Ming New Garden. If you come to Hengdian Film City for tourism, it is highly recommended to come and see it.
