Dujiangyan to Qianglongshan Mountain Rail Transit Project Officially Starts! Facilitates Tourism Integration Between Northwestern Sichuan and the Chengdu Plain
Mount Qianglongshan is famous all over the world and its fame is growing. While rail transit has been established in many cities, including tourist rail transit, mountain-style rail transit is still relatively rare.
Breaking news from Sichuan!Dujiangyan to Qianglongshan mountain rail transit project officially started on March 26th (in Wenchuan County, Yixiu Town).

The Dujiangyan to Qianglongshan mountain rail project starts from Dujiangyan City, Chengdu, passes through Wenchuan County, Yixiu Town, connecting Genda, Longwang, Dengshenggou, Balangshan, and ends at Xiaojin County, Qianglongshan Town. The project line is about 123.18 kilometers long, with a maximum design running speed of 120 kilometers, mainly for passenger transport, with light freight transport, planned construction period of 6 years.
The Dujiangyan-Qianglongshan mountain rail is the first in China to use gear tracks as running tracks, opening up a precedent for mountain rail transit in China. The project draws on the successful operational experience of foreign ‘narrow gauge + gear track’ technology, scientifically integrated into Chinese railway technology, and adopts a dual-gauge, metric design with electric traction, specifically for mountainous lines, with flexible curve radii, using steel wheels and steel rails on large slope sections, and gear-bar dual traction to realize smooth passage through high-altitude areas with large slopes, characterized by small land occupation, ecological environmental protection, strong climbing ability, and high efficiency and convenience.
The Dujiangyan-Qianglongshan project is a key project built under Sichuan Province’s ‘Transportation + Tourism’ Integrated Development Special Action Plan (2017-2020).It effectively connects Dujiangyan, Qingchengshan, Yixiu, Longwang, Qianglongshan, Dengshenggou, Balangshan, etc.along the line, utilizing rich natural resources and forming a unique Sichuan tourism landscape line. It will also further promote the poverty alleviation strategy, linking Sichuan’s northwestern rich tourism resources with the Chengdu Plain to form a combination of transportation and tourism, driving the development and improvement of tourism and related service industries along the line.
Qianglongshan has become one of China’s most famous ‘outdoor paradises’ in recent years. Many outdoor sports enthusiasts climb, camp, rock climb, ice climb, glide, and hike in the valley every year. This is because Qianglongshan is one of the few mountains that can meet the needs of outdoor enthusiasts from beginner to advanced, and its natural scenery is richer than the Alps.
Qianglongshan is composed of 4 adjacent snow mountains (namely Qianglongshan, Sanqianglongshan, Liangqianglongshan, and Daqianglongshan), with the highest peak Qianglongshan at an altitude of 6250 meters, which is 1400 meters higher than Mont Blanc in the Alps.
